Because they're insuring(?), working foreigners who could now be using the Korean National Health Care System to give birth to another dirty foreigner on the ROK. And because when the hagwon owner was told of the pregnancy he/she was forced to imagine dirty foreigner workers having sex at home while they should've been planning lessons for the next day. The child will not be a little Korean prince or princess, all that "looks bad." It's not what it is, but what's perceived.

Which is why it's a good idea to play up the "fat foreigner" card and dress in ways that help hide the bump until the 6-month mark. Hiding it for as long as possible is best.

It's funny, because Koreans LOVE foreign babies. <<shrugs>>

I've been working at my school around three years. During that time, five of us have gotten pregnant and forced to quit. Some Korean, some not. One person fought tooth and nail for maternity leave. The school weaseled out of it by refusing to sign any documents that stated we were leaving to have a baby. We need the administration's signature to get maternity leave benefits. Instead, we all had to write that we were leaving for 'personal reasons.'

I was the only one re-hired after that. Korean women, in my experience, have just as much trouble working at a school while pregnant/being a mother, as we foreigners do.

I know a lot of moms, and while there are definitely some good schools and universities that take care of their pregnant workers/working moms, the overwhelming majorities of the stories I've heard are so depressing.
