No. The island that is owned by Britain. Ascencion.

species isn't a plural for specy

I meant that " specify" is of the same word stock. If you specify, name a newly discovered plant, it becomes recognised as a species. Different forms of the the same verb: specification, specified. Don't tell me: you pronounce it " speshification?"?? or is that just after you had some shoju?

and Ascencion is from what language originally?

so you pronounce all words from the same word stock the same. so how do "ratio" or "ration" and "rational" fit into that rule?

thebum: maybe you should have made it a poll to avoid our bickering. Wink

i say it with a "sh". my cambridge dictionary says that's fine. i've heard it with a "s", and i don't see anything wrong with that, it just sounds a little funny to me. and good luck finding a real rule to govern it.

All english words are from what languages originally? in any case there are other examples. eg "Suspicion " "spacious" precious" etc.

All pronounced with a "sh" sound of course.

and the "a" in them? or does that rule not count for vowels?

ascencion is spanish. it's difficult for anglophones to pronounce correctly, so it's been b*stardised into a "sh"

No. were were specifically talking about the word 'species" and its related forms, and the "cie" pronunciation. Do you pronounc "intricacies" as 'intricashees"? no.

Wow, we have a sherlock here. yes: but now its english.

Look at all these lovely English words:

trek-afrikaans
blitz -german
piano-italian
algae-latin
chrysalis-greek
santa claus-dutch
croissant-french

-etc etc. English has asimilated words from virtually every other language on earth, unchanged. They are now English words.

you agree then that pronouncing the c as "sh" is wrong then? Thanks for playing.

wait, so that quote about "same word stock" really means nothing? or it only applies to "species" and words related to it?

Ummm...do you need reading glases ? Those are " scie". There is some overlap but we were talking of "cie" specifically. Don't twist it now..

You've been caught out fair and square miss ever-so-cool Whitehead. Now learn, and move on and try to repair your injured pride.

Sadly, I'm going to have to agree with junior (the horror). It's pretty unusual for "cie" preceeded immediately by a vowel (so yeah, "science" can't be counted), to be homophonous with "she". It's always (as far as I can find) the same as "see".

I'm not sure why "species" is an exception for many people...

cute. you were previously saying something about "word families" and how they should all be pronounced the same. i'm just wondering if you're still backing that... are you?

by the way, you'd better start that letter to Cambridge about how wrong their dictionary is. i'm sure somebody there needs something to line their kitty litter box.

edit: additionally, you have implied that pronunciation cannot change over time. if i recall correctly, it was something to the tune of 'we can't just add another pronunciation to the lexicon just because some people are saying the word differently.' do you say 'leisure' as it was first pronounced ('lehsure') or have you gotten on the 'leesure' boat?

oh, and i don't need "reading glases". i strongly suggest you buy an elementary book on linguistics. (insert rasperry here, as it seems to somehow fit the level of your last post, though i've been trying my darndest not to lower myself: pthbthptpthtphthb.)
