Hi all

I just read the thread on this. My co-teacher asked me today if I could provide access for her of my uni's database so she could see an alumni list. She said she thinks this is the first time that immigration has done this.

I understand why they're doing it but they don't seem to understand that most western countries have privacy laws against this kind of thing.

In any case, has anyone emailed Dain Bae or Wenise Kim about this? I know they went to school in Australia and New Zealand. I seriously doubt that their universities would provide such a thing for just anyone to log on and check out.

Paper documents are no longer enough in Korea. I'm guessing there are still heaps of foreign teachers here who entered with fake degrees. Now we're all paying the price.

i just got this memo this morning and I told my coteacher no way i can show her on the internet. I told her to tell the school board to call my University if they want to.
she responded: how about you edit the page? i think they only need to see your name so make one up.

Actually, some schools have a special database for employers to access and verify that documents are authentic. The university I graduated from in Australia does not have this.

The ministry of education (Gyeongi) said they will accept an email from the school registrar today after my co-teacher called them. I suppose they could always change their mind...

The whole thing is a joke for those of who have already verified our degrees multiple times. I've brought in my diploma and sealed transcripts to both school and immigration twice before. I didn't make a big deal of the request I got yesterday since it's quite easy to go my university's website and get an unofficial transcript page printed out. I did however ask if the reason for all the degree checking was because of all the Koreans who have lied about their degrees

My co-teacher just hit me up about this too, but I just went to my University's Alumni site, looked up the date of graduation and printed it off, it was 20 pages long, but my name was on it. Of course this might not be enough for the Masters of the Universe or my principal "Skeletor" but we'll see.

I looked up my name in the alumni directory, and printed out my page with my name and date of graduation. You have to be an actual alumni to log into that page, so they can't go to the internet & access it themselves, but I guess the print out is enough (although it would totally be easy to fake, so I don't think it proves much...). My co-teacher said it was enough. She also said it was because of Koreans forging degrees, and apologized like 20 times that I had to do it.

I'm having difficulties doing this.
I go on the website and the page that would have my name (filed under M to N) does not exist. There are other pages that have been erased and some that are still there.
Why do we have to do this? It's just a bunch of names it doesn't really prove anything -- I think anyways.

I wish this would happen at every single hogwan in Korea. The illegal teachers are in hagwon, not public schools.

My university has absolutely no online information re: graduates; I assume because of the Canadian Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (how's that for oxymoronic?). However, for $15.00 they will send me a Certificate of Degree Completion - if I print out the application form, sign it (in blood ) and mail it to them. I'm not doing that!

The last time I was asked to confirm I had a degree was almost two years ago. I took my degree to work, made a photocopy and gave it to them. Of course, that proved absolutely nothing but they were happy because I appeared to be jumping through some sort of hoop.

Diploma and sealed transcripts mean nothing. Do you honestly think degree fakers are stupid enough to fake a degree and not fake the transcripts?

Your transcripts are not some holy writ sent from the heavens. It's a stupid envelope that has an ink stamp on it. Its not that hard to make a fake transcript, stuff it into an envelope, seal it, and then put a rubber stamp over the flap that says "OFFICIAL".

Why in the world are people making a big deal out of this. It took me 5 minutes to verify everything with my school.

BTW, back home in the US, you have no privacy in the workplace. Every e-mail and website you visit is logged and tracked. I know people who's sole job is to sift through people's emails.
