A recent article in the Chosun Ilbo jogged my memory about this. Apparently it was one of Roh's pet projects to move the administrative capital from Seoul to a yet-unbuilt city near Daejon called Sejong City. Is this still going to happen?

The government also plans to develop a 3,579 sq-km area surrounding Sejong into a comprehensive metropolitan area inhabited by 4 million people. The area will incorporate the present Chungcheong provincial cities of Daejeon, Gongju, Gyeryong, Cheonan and Cheongju.
According to the plan, every place inside the metropolitan area will be within 20-minutes by public transportation. People will also be able to reach any destination in South Korea within two hours through the rapid-transit system being devised.
Sejong will boast the lowest population density of any large Korean city, and the towering apartment complexes seen in most Korean cities will not cast shadows on Sejong's streets. Clusters of 20 to 30 houses, two or three stories each, will share a grand exit, which will bring people in the neighborhood much closer. |
