|

I see these posts where folks brag about how much won they're raking in (good for them, btw), and I honestly can't see how that is possible unless:
1.) They're on an F-visa
or
2.) They're working illegally.
I am a relative newbie here, so I have a very hard time seeing how it's possible to make more than 3m / month (and that's high-end) while on an E-2 and not be working illegally.
Can anyone offer evidence / advice to the contrary? |

You forgot to add:
3.) They're not working in education.
Those of us working for international companies in Korea are most certainly earning 4m and up. |

Before I got married (and got the F-2) I was making more than that because:
a) I got lucky and landed a job with a college that has a decent hour-for-hour contract (better than most I've seen lately)
b) Said college paid extra for overtime/institute classes/camps
c) Said college gave me permission for an extra morning job (which was a rare thing for them to do and I was lucky to get).
All legal. |

I saw an ad the other day in the jobs section of this site for a corporate English teacher in a ship building company on Geoje island in the south.
It said, it requires a special candidate who can work across all the different departments and business groups of the company. It looked like a great job, but you have to be available right now and have a Korean drivers license to drive a company car. Probably intended for an F-2 holder with many years of experience, particularly in business English, but it didn't mention anything about required experience. If I were free right now, I would apply for it and go visit them during the daytime; all suited up since I have the appropriate degree and knowledge.
I wonder if there will be more business type jobs coming up? This was the first one I had seen advertised. I would be really charged up to join a real company to work with many different people in many different business units and profit centers and have a chance at a real professional career that pays at least US $50,000 a year or 50 million won a year. I am thinking that when the time if right, I can apply for jobs that are not advertised and maybe find something through contacting people, but it just takes time and effort while being unemployed.
I would bet that this is a great career opportunity, but requires very long hours. I would commit myself to a highly involved job to have a chance at building some real money up instead of chump change. |

Interesting. I was reading in another thread about foreigners who teach TOEFL and SAT prep courses earning 5m +.
My question: Where does one find these jobs? I realize "networking" is the most obvious answer, but can anyone offer something concrete?
It seems that so many of the posters here are making "serious money" (by serious I mean more than 4m / month) yet no one seems to be able (or is it "willing"?) to talk about their experience, how they landed that golden job, or how we who are not "in the know" can at least apply for these positions.
*EDIT* I neglected to check my PM box--thanks to the guy who responded!
If anyone else feels more comfortable responding to my questions via PM, please don't hesitate!
Thanks,
EC |

Personally I don't brag about how much I make and think those that do have an ego problem.
That being said, if you really want to make more money, build up some experience and work at a university. In addition to my base salary, I get paid more for specialized classes (like teacher training). |

Not that hard. Although I'm not presently doing this, I have in the past.
During the semester:
University base salary for 12 hours + overtime + classes at the university hagwon + any other work around (the university allows it).
During the breaks:
University base salary for no hours + extra pay for summer/winter classes + university hagwon classes + any other work (including camps) |

Thanks for the input. Do typical unigwons allow you to find other work during your non-working hours? |

My understand is that public universities (not sure about private ones) will not allow you to work outside the school regardless of your visa. In that case, the F-series visas don't really give you a big advantage. |

I don't think so. You need to teach in one of the departments. But, I'm not sure how many universities will sign you out to teach in other places. |

I'd be curious on info on places that hire TOEFL/AP/SAT teachers. Like 1/100 job postings are looking for that type of teacher. |

SNU's ELI is hiring proofreaders to work over the net. The pay is probably around 10K/page and up, depending on the level of the work and the turnaround time. One way to up your salary for minimum effort.
Other universities are jumping on the bandwagon with this service.
Just one more way to generate income.... |

they arent too rare to find even if you teach just TOEFL, places like CDI will pay over 40,000 an hour for those classes. The other jobs are going to be at small boutique firms in which you are either going to need to know someone or have experience, your own curriculum, or your own clients that you can bring to the hagwon. |
