So a friend of mine recommended a good tailor in Itaewon named CASEY. He has a shop right next to the arch close to noksapyeong station. I went in and he was a really nice old man. He was kind of pitiful and looked like an anthropoid with a kind smile so I felt at ease as I first paid 160,000 as a deposit and then 140,000 during the fitting. A week later when I went back to pick up my two suits (it was only 300,000 for two because this is FAMILY PRICE he said... to EARN my business so I can recommend others) ... he says his factory has burned down in an electric fire and he's in a mess. Please give him one more week and he's gonna have them ready. Then I proceed to call all week. No answer.

I show up on Thursday with my Korean friend to find a gang of people looking for him. The cops pretty much ignored me for an hour while concentrating on looking as cool as possible while they smoked and looked tough...then said I can file something if I want but it will do no good because this guy has already skipped town with over $50,000 US in orders, deposits, back rent, stolen cash, loans, and the whole 9.

I hear this all the time in Korea. There are so many whitey schmucks here.
" Oh but Mr Hogwon owner is sooo kind, and Miss Kim has such a lovely smile."
When will people ever learn TRUST NO ONE here.
Call me cynical but as soon as I hear a newbie, and even worse an old hand say this, it's obvious the person is a fool and is gonna take it up the butt.

Hmmm... I saw the suits this guy made for my friend and his shop had been there over 4 years. I also don't see how I could have changed the outcome. Where I'm from we don't carry cash but there's really no way around that in Korea and cards aren't an option in many places.

Yes, just because someone has a lovely smile doesn't mean he/she is a wonderful, honest person. Some of the most evil people in the world seem nice or look nice.

Too bad. I got a nice suit from him a few years back.

But still, he's a dirty crook.

Given that Korea is lacking in effective bankruptcy laws, its seems as if this type of collect-and-run behavior is essentially the equivalent of Chapter 11 in the US. Essentially, I doubt most of these conmen don't actively seek to do so from the beginning, but rather assess their situation one day and decide its just better to not complete their orders and head out. The real question I have is: where do they go?

something about Tailor of Itaewan sounds ominous. Wink

Sorry you got burned--when I was new I gotfitted for a shirt. It was a ripoff-material was something a Chinese peasant would wear (or wouldnt wear.)

But there are good deals there or so I hear and it the guy was there 4 years it would seem a good bet, Don't know why some are blaming the victim.

Old man Casey's pension wasn't cuttin it; he needed a retirement plan and found one tax free.

If you're keen on getting your moneyback just find a way to recoup it elsewhere?

When in Rome, right?

All of the tailors in Itaewon that I've been to ask for a deposit. I usually drop about a fifty on them and tell them the rest is coming upon delivery.

After reading this, I think I'll save buying any fancy clothes for when I get back home.

Good deal on a suit is a shop in Samsung dong called, "Dainty."

You can get two suits for 380,000, and they do a good job.

Call 02-569-7485.

I opted for one suit for 400,000, which was made of a higher-grade material, but the others are still well-made and look great.

Was considering getting two more, but I don't need them yet.

The woman doesn't speak English much, but she understands some. She's in her mid/late 30s, and was the first suit maker I've had that had me come back to try the suit on at mid-completion to double-check size.

We're happy.

I purchased one suit from one of the overpriced tailors in Itaewon (I say overpriced because the quality sucks) and I still have it 4 years later, but I don't wear it much. It continually falls apart at the leg seems, and needs repair 2 or 3 times a year, despite me not wearing it much. The material from the shoulder pads is working its way through, as well, so I have these little white balls of fuzz I constantly have to trim off. Pulling them makes more material come out.

Avoid the shops in Itaewon, as they all farm out their business to the cheapest shops at Chonggyechon anyway.

A year ago I would have given you the smack down but my school AFTER 6 YEARS (public school) is trying to cheat me out of quite a bit of cash. While the teachers, other staff and students are and have always been wonderful. The administration is bound and determined to cheat me out of my pro-rated pay for the month and any part of bonus.

I have spent literally hundreds of dollars buying things to make my classes better. Books, Bulletin board decorations, art supplies, construction paper. I taught a CA class which NO foreign teacher does in my city and now they want to nickle and dime me. I am beyond hurt. I took these kids on actual field trips. We made a newspaper! Took them to Korean Herald and they were on the front cover of the Kids Herald. Took them to Yongsan and spent the day. They got a full tour and got to play mini-golf and were featured on AFKN television.

We had cooking classes which damn near killed me. But wanted the kids to have fun making recipe books, making and eating food from other countries. I did not get paid for the C.A. Classes. I wanted to have a seriously long amount of time with a small group of students to do some content based things that showed them that learning English could be an advantage. I made jack-o-lanterns and had a real Halloween party during my CA class. I gave them my heart, sometimes my health and every bit of my ability and now it comes down to we ain't paying biatch...seeya!

I do NOT blame the teachers or the students. I love them dearly but any faith in the honor and integrity of Korean business practices has been shattered. Sorry but after 6 years at the same school I expected better.

I know my replacement reads this board. Please understand that this is financial thing. The students are pretty damn sweet. The co-teachers helpful. Most the staff kind and more than generous. But the ugliness that is about to insue about money hurts me to the core.
