Yeah, very sad.....

This will throw another nation into chaos and severely weaken Afghanistan's eastern frontier........

U.S. troops in that AO will have their hands full.

tragic, heartbreaking, crime against civilization...such a devastating loss and a totally dire day for democracy in the world's most dangerous country...

About six months ago, I was watching some beeb review on the situation in paksitan. part of it was an interview with young bhutto, who was returning. The interviewer basically said, "you know, you're probably going to die for this, if you go back.'
She said, 'yup.'

. "%(@&," I said, "she's gonna get done. She's got too many enemies there."
""But why?" asked my friend. "What's the point? why does she go back, then? And why do they wanna kill her so badly?"

"I dunno" i said.

Still don't really know.

Sucks to be right.

Yes, that's a good point yata boy. But: a) is her country better off now that she's dead at the hands of whoever it was who killed her? and b) Would things have been worse had she stayed away?

I think she would say that 'both a and b above are tough questions, but it's better to go and find out, than to do nothing and wonder what might've been.'

I sure don't think her country is better off now that she's dead. What I meant was, she knew that she'd stand a good chance of being killed if she went back. She had to weigh the options--I was looking at it like, "ok, I'm going back--hoping to do good--but if I get killed, what happens then? How will my supporters react? Will my death cause even more strife and bloodshed?"

Of course, I support her choice to go back. Regardless. But, man, what happens now?

Sorry if I was being unclear, or seemed callous. I'm a huge admirer of the woman.

A sad and terrible act for sure.

I just read on CNN though, that there were gunshots before the bomb went off, and that after the gunshots, she fell back into her car, then the bomb went off. They're saying now it was actually gunshot wounds that killed her.

Guns and a bomb. Someone really wanted to make sure they got her.

She was definitely a brave person to go back, knowing what fate she would probably suffer.

I think her father and brother had also lost there lives because of politics.

Although Al Qaeda figures to be the leading suspect, Bhutto has said that the Musharaf government should be held accountable for not providing adequate security if she were killed.

Which is why many of her followers are blaming Musharaf.

It's widely suspected that Al Quaeda sympathizers have infiltrated both security and intelligence operations at high levels of the Pakistan government.

Most political analysts think that the U.S. should continue to pressure Musharaf to hold elections as scheduled - even though he now has a very slim chance of winning.

I recall that she was a student at my Mom's Alma Mater (Radcliffe College) and was often in the Boston Globe when I was a kid in East Lynn.

She had a bad rep, though, with stories of physical abuse of political opponents.

She was pretty young, too, when I read this stuff when I was in Secondary School.

Her fam had loads of enemies for decades, eh, but she could have CHANGED Pakistan...

I was sad to hear what happened to her. I knew that people wanted her dead since I first heard about her a year ago, but in places like that death threats are talked about everyday.
