In Mr. Noh's New years speech last night he wished a happy new years to all koreans and the "7 million who are living abroad". Can anyone confirm that 7 million Koreans live abroad? Doesn't that seem like a huge number considering Korea has about 50 million citizens? That's over 10% if I have the numbers correct.

Problem is - Koreans often telling foreigners to GET OUT of their country - GO HOME - this is MY COUNTRY...

yet 7 million Koreans live in OUR countries........

Is he talking about Korean citizens or ethnic Koreans? Why does he need to mention that? Is he really trying to make Korea seem like a cosmopolitan country or trying to make himself seem less of a xenophobe?

I thought he was refering ethnic Koreans living in other countries who are not ROK passport holders. But, if that number of 7 million are ROK passport holders who are out side of the boarders, speaks heaps obout the state of Korea now! I would have guessed the number would be closer to 3 to 4 million.

The Korean Ministry of Population estimates that of the 61.3 million ethnic Koreans alive in the year 2000, 8.4 million live outside the boundaries of Korea.

Geez - maybe 1.4 million died since the year 2000?

Large-scale emigration from Korea began as early as the mid-1860s, mainly into the Russian Far East and Northeast China; these emigrants became the ancestors of the 2 million ethnic Koreans in China and several hundred thousand ethnic Koreans in Central Asia.

During the Japanese colonial period of 1910-1945, Koreans were often recruited and or forced into labour service to work in mainland Japan, Karafuto Prefecture, and Manchukuo; the ones who chose to remain in Japan at the end of the war became known as Zainichi Koreans, while the roughly 40 thousand who were trapped in Karafuto after the Soviet invasion are typically referred to as Sakhalin Koreans.

Korean emigration to America was known to have begun as early as 1903, but the Korean American community did not grow to a significant size until after the passage of the Immigration Reform Act of 1965; now, roughly 2 million Koreans live in the United States.

Large Koreatowns can also be found in Australia, Brazil, and Canada. The largest Korean community outside of Korea is in Los Angeles, California. British Koreans now form Western Europe's largest Korean community; Koreans in Germany used to outnumber the ones in the UK until the late 1990s. There are also Koreatowns in Latin American countries such as Argentina, Guatemala, and Mexico. In recent years, the number of Koreans in the Philippines and Koreans in Vietnam have also grown significantly.

Ah, the ability to equate the part with the whole.

On the one hand, North Koreans are Koreans;
On the other hand, even Koreans talk about Koreans as if North Koreans were not Koreans.

This thread talks about Koreans with no reference to N.Kers: unless they are part of the 7 million living outside of the country.

This kind of thing happens a lot.

Actually Stalin deported a huge amount of Koreans to the former Soviet Union, most I think ended up in Kazikistan. Not all of the people from Korea you went to other countries were willining migrants.
