new to korea and craft/sew for hobbies.
havin a tough time finding a sewing machine at a decent price (under $200)

checked out dongdemoon - mostly industrial machines.
went to eujiro 'sewing machine street' - couldnt find anything for less than $200.

i just need something basic.
is there something in korea similar to yuzawaya in japan?
or michaels/pearl/joann fabric in the states?

any help would be awesome.

Rats. I've been thinking the same thing. I just can't bring myself to wear the frills upon frills, and reckoned I'd put my skills to use after three years of complaining and shopping back home.

I think your best bet is online. I'm going to talk to some Korean friends to help me out, and if I get any more info, I'll let you know.

Sewing machine store called "Sewing machine department store" (but really just a tiny store) - Hongje Station (orange line). Not positive of Exit (possibly 3?) but head back toward Muakjae Station, toward Pizza Hut/Samsung Digital store. About 100 m from exit. Not been inside myself but I know they have sewing machines.Hope this helps.

I went for a walk at Seoul Forest today, and on the way from Ttukseom station, I passed a sort of flea market with junk sellers peddling the craziest objects. Quite a few of them were selling sewing machines! Some were old, some were new, most were very very basic.

I picked up a machine for 20,000 won! It looks brand new, but it doesn't do anything but normal straight stitch (not even a zigzag.) I don't know if it works yet, but I'm pleased to be able to mend things at least.

Now, does anyone know where to get patterns? Can I buy them in Korea, or do I have to order them?

I just saw a whole bunch of sewing machine shops today. I was in Euljiro right next to Chunggechun. There were at least 8 or 10 shops that I saw. In reference to the person who told you to try Yongsan, I'd say no...I haven't seen sewing machines there.

In reference to the person who said they haven't seen sewing machines at Yongsan, I have seen sewing machines at Yongsan.... That's kind of why I suggested Yongsan.

I was just looking at some cute little machines on gmarket... some nice basic ones with 7 different stitches are only around 40,000 won.
