I don't want to live in a world where hipster idiots brainwash people into believing that The Mars Volta isn't the greatest rock band of the 21st century.
PS - Cedric Bixler-Zavala has a voice that makes me wet -- and I'm male. Bonus points like a mutha. |

they're bad like a sandwich that features every food in the fridge is bad.
unfocused, pretentious, dull, faux-intelligent.
i admire them for their chutzpah but their music is toilet water. |

Not to sound insulting, but it may be listeners who are too impatient, and not TMV noodling their way into oblivion. ADD sufferers don't stand a chance.
How so? I've always thought that label applies more to their critics. Take Pitchfork, for example: the ultimate case of irony.
To use your example, two pieces of bread are dull; throw everything between those badboys, however, and even if it doesn't suit your taste, that sandwich is far from dull.
Dull is Maroon 5. Dull is Certs without the retsyn.
Now you're just slinging adjectives. TMV, to my knowledge, has never done anything than make music. Sure, their albums are inspired by suicides of band members, diaries found in repossessed cars, and a ouija board, but, come on, who's leg is being pulled? Their music isn't Ayn Rand; and anyone who thinks "water..thirsty" or similar lyrics hold any significance is probably too stupid or immature to appreciate the band's true charm -- namely, kicking ass and taking names via amazing instrumentation and vocals. |

well... i have no problem with noodling. i just expect that once the noodling is finished, and especially if we've spent 7-12 minutes doing so, that we actually get somewhere. every TMV song i've ever heard falls flat.
an ADD sufferer shouldn't have a problem with music. i don't suffer ADD and they somehow fail to keep my attention. it's constantly a case of "that's it?!?" and the frustration with knowing these guys have real talent, and yet they travel so damn long to find out that the barn door is closed and locked.

dull is a piece of art that has zero focus. dull is a piece of art that attempts to put together disparate elements but fails to acheive any cohesion or create a whirling mass of excitement that moves you.
how does a mayonnaise, orange, baloney, ice cream, lettuce, mustard, yogurt, onion and tomato sandwich taste? it tastes like nothing.
i'm all for dischord, mish-mashing differing elements together and raw creativity, but TMV bore me to tears.
that said, i've been meaning to give them another chance for a while now.
downloading as we speak with my fingers nervously poised over the "select all" and "delete" keys. i'm all for second chances, but first impressions are hard to alter.
i still can't shake the "WTF IS THIS RIDICULOUS CRAP?" feeling i got during the first 4-5 chances i gave TMV. |

one cool point for TMV. anyone who wears sunglasses inside deserves to be f'd with. good on them for calling a party foul and dealing with it expeditiously. |

I bought the first album when it came out and thought the first few tracks were awesome. But then it devolved into noodling.
They are a good band. Not an awesome one. Relationships of Command by ATDI was a lot better.

They opened for Tool on a tour a couple years ago...you might like 'em. |

i really enjoyed the tremulant EP and deloused at the comatorium, which were both song-based albums with occassional forays into experimental jams...
IMO they haven't been the same since: francis the mute is incredibly over-long with only 2 or 3 memorable sections, and amputecture is not much better... i think that without a strong producer like rick rubin at the helm to cut through the crap, TMV's ideas are too grandiose and self-indulgent for my tastes...

I agree. the tremulant EP is my favorite work from them. From that point on I think it was a descent into a cauldron of confusion. I saw them live in their beginning and a concert a couple years ago, they still rock it live, but I found myself snoozing off on their newer material...at the concert! |
