Hello..I had a cold shower my first day here, but then I worked out how to heat up the water! I tried to do so today, but it will not work!!! How do I make it work? When I press the Red Button to turn it on (like always) I get a flashing red light (as pictured) and then if I try to turn the water on (the green button below the red)....NOTHING happens!!! Can someone tell me what is happening, and what I can do to fix this? Thanks.

Oh dear....the FAQ is down, and I can't remember how to post a picture!!!!!

It has to be primed.

Under the boiler (not the control box, the actual boiler) there's likely a little brass spigot. Turn that and you'll hear water flowing. Let it flow into the boiler until water starts spurting out of the overflow hose (stand to the side of the boiler so you don't get wet) and turn off the spigot. Go back to the thermostat box and turn the heater back on and you should be good to go.

The boiler is probably hanging on a wall in some innocuous place such as the kimchi balcony or outside in the entranceway. It looks like a large white emergency kit hanging on the wall with a flexible chimney pipe leading out from the top and and a few pipes wrapped in (probably) yellow insulating material leading in. If you still can't find it, follow the gas line leading into your range -- generally in the crap holes that schools put us into they put the boiler near where the gas comes into the house.

Thanks mate....I found it....I turned the spigot....no noise....no water....do I have to leave it open for a while? I appreciate the help by the way....especially because tomorrow is my first day of actual teaching...and a cold shower is not how I want to start things!!!

Hmmm. It should be immediate...

Check upstream on the pipe running into the boiler and see if there's a quarter-turn valve somewhere that is off.

If you haven't gotten things worked out, try this...

a) put on your most pitiful face and knock on the neighbor's door

b) keeping your palm down, motion to follow you...

c) lead your puzzled neighbor to the boiler and shrug your shoulders.

d) after they fix things for you, run down to the nearest convenience shop and buy some fruit and deliver to the neighbors.

Awesome idea...I think that's what I might have to go with!

There wouldn't happen to be a notice written in Korean taped on your door, would there?

I had a similar problem and... yeah they turned my gas off for a huge unpaid bill during my first week in the place.

I omitted Step 2:

Copy down everything (EVERYTHING) on the thermostat and take it to work with you tomorrow and ask someone to translate it for you. The best way is to draw a diagram of the thing and copy, letter-for-letter, the words.

But in the meantime, try the neighbors. Playing the Stupid Foreigner Card is known to have worked thousands of times. It's also useful when you want to do something you know you aren't supposed to...like riding a cycle with no helmet.

Good luck.

When I get the flashing red light, I turn the switch off on my boiler, wait a few seconds, then flip it back on. It's worked three times so far.

For those of you who enjoy a good water heater story (and shucks...who can resist one?), the problem with my hot water heater has been fixed...today. Some major component needed replacing...the guy came over...and charged me $80 to fix it...which is a bit steep considering I have been living there ten days. The school won't pay (is not in contract, is not in contract) so it's my charge.

The good news is...that none of you were wrong! I really appreciate the advice, and the fact that I tried ALL of the suggestions means that I should be in a good position to fix it in the future (providing it is a minor issue).

Thanks for the help!

This thread is GOLD. Maximum respect to the posters for loads of helpful advice and no wisecracks.

Bummer that you had to pay 80,000 though, as it should be the landlord's expense. Hassle the school to contact the landlord.

Well...I asked to make it half-half...but the lady at the office called down today...asked me to sign a receipt...and paid me the full 80,000. Nice!

We had a planned gas shutdown last week as they fixed a leak somewhere in the block.
In the morning, the red light was flashing.

There were some printed instructions in pictures and Korean on the boiler for dealing with the "red light of cold water". It suggested cleaning some filter thing which can get possibly blocked with impurities from time to time. This looked to complex an operation too confidently carry out.

My wife said that when we moved in at the beginning of March, there was a similar flashing light. The maintenance man fixed by going to the boiler for about 30 secs.

Armed with this knowledge and renewed confidence, I returned to the boiler and pulled the power supply out and then re-inserted it.
There you go, your father has a brother called Robert.
