My girlfriend and I were just offered a position in Gimhae near Busan. The Korean recruiter is really pushing for me to sign the contract tonight. He also says that since I broke contract in 06 from a Wonderland School after 5 months that I am black listed, but that they will give him a letter of release if he goes there in person. I feel like this is his way of making me use him as a recruiter. I'm not even sure if I could really be blacklisted. At the time I "ran" I was thinking about switching schools and I know that required a letter of release, but it's been almost two years now, do I really need one? I don't see how I could owe them money, they kept half of my first 3 paychecks!

That's for sure.

You don't need a "letter of release" if your visa has expired. Why did you let the dirty little cheats keep half of your first 3 pay checks? And why are you being so honest with recruiters to tell them the minute details of your past job in Korea? I think you need to wise up and stand up for yourself a bit more.

I felt like I should be honest up front to iron out any problems that it may cause in the future. Bad habit, I guess. Letting them keep 1/2 of my pay was never a plan, it was something that they surprised me with when I arrived.

Give us the recruiter's email so we can have some fun with him.

The recruiter you are using is lying...not mistaken mind you, he's outright lying.

Find every recruiter you can...use all of them, but when they lie to you, cross them off the list.

The bad news is that YES you can be blacklisted. It happened to me. I was on the blacklist from '94 to 2001. The result was my work visa was blocked in '95, '99 and '01 when I changed jobs. I was able to get past the blacklist because the bosses knew people in the government. The second one also almost certainly paid a bribe. The third one was enough of a heavyweight to get my Immi record cleared.

Are YOU blacklisted? I'm not in a position to look at your Immi file, so I don't know. The posters above me didn't mention looking at your file so my guess is they have no idea either.

Is the recruiter scamming you? Who knows. My guess is he's telling the truth. But it's only a guess.

There's a number you can call (I believe) to have your name removed from the blacklist. The blacklist is illegal.

Anyone have more information on this?

Of course you can be blacklisted but this has nothing to do with any "letter of release". The fact that the recruiter is talking about that suggests he's trying to pull one. It's also highly unlikely that the immigration authorities would reveal details of their blacklist to anyone who calls them.

Please explain the circumstances of how you came to be blacklisted. I bet there was more to it than just leaving a job early.

If all you did leave your job early, then you're not blacklisted, most likely. I would check with another recruiter. If to different recruiters tell you you're blacklisted, then it's probably real. Once again, a letter of release ha nothing to do with blacklisting.

mate, b#llo%#ks to that. wouldn't suprise me if the recruiter charged you for the letter. Hagwon and public schools in this area are desperate for teachers. the only blacklist type thing i've heard of is a mark on your immi record which only means you have an interview ( according to immi ).
yep, try another recruiter, there are plenty here and don't be presured into signing. i put my recruiter off for 2 months and the job was still there.they just think short term money asap.
goo dluck!

Yeah there was more to it. I left on the saturday after a payday with no warning other that the fact that they knew all 3 English teachers were very very pissed at them. They had also refused to give me my diploma back so I took it off of the wall the day before and replaced it with a copy while no one was around. Shady yes, but last I checked, taking your own diploma isn't stealing. They're just lucky I didn't release 50 or so mice in the school, like myself and the other 2 English teachers had talked about!

Laughing I was talking to Ya-ta Boy who claims to have been blacklisted. You can't be blacklisted for taking your own diploma. Personally I would never leave important documents in the hand of my employer. I would explain that my degree certificate is important to me and stays locked up in my home.

Being blacklisted by immigration (if that really is possible) is one thing.

Requiring a LOR from a previous employer is not directly linked to the former. You do not need a LOR once your original visa duration has expired.

If you are somehow blacklisted by immigration - a LOR or any letter from a previous employer wouldn't mean squat.

Someone (i.e. recruiter) is really yanking your chain -
