I have heard of this being used, although it wasn't a teacher.

For her, it was an unpaid day of leave.

Wonder if I can use it because the missus has given me grief all night and I didn't get any sleep.

I've never heard of a teacher actually being able to use this. If anything this 'law' suggests that women are not as dependable or capable workers as men. Whether that is or isn't true, it seems to send a bad message.

Oh, yeah, shedding your uterine lining in a way so painful that sometimes you literally can't get out of bed is awesome. You should definitely sign up for it next time around!

OP, I wouldn't try to use it; your co-workers will never respect you again. If it's that bad, use a regular sick day.

And there's the classic feminist dilemma: do you want to admit that you're disatvantaged and try to use it to your benefit, or pretend that you're not? It's interesting that, for the sake of the latter, a law like this could never pass in the feminist west, but could in an ultra-sexist country finally showing a wee bit of compassion towards the 'weaker' sex, at least in lip service.

Sure it sucks, but I'd trade places with you if it got me out of 2 years army service and a day off of work every month.

Can I take a day off if I have blue balls?

Okay. Please be advised that it also comes with a 20% average lifetime pay cut in both the US and South Korea. Also, people will assume you're PMSing when you're really just a disagreeable person.

I think a day off for blue balls is fair, if you're willing to call your employer and explain why you need it.

Edit: Yu_Bum_suk, your point is thoughtful and well considered. It kind of reflects the division between second and third wave feminists in the West; e.g., should women seek or reject treatment that differentiates them from men?

His response will be that you have 5 minutes, so hurry up and wash your hands afterwards.

I have students at Yonsei University trying to get away with missing class by giving me "Official Menstruation" excuses. The university leaves it up to instructors whether we accept them or not. I'm a female and I NEVER accept them. If I have to go to work, they have to come to class! (I've never asked for a day off a month, but I'm positive Yonsei would not allow it.) Whatever happened to women wanting equal rights?

Gender Issues Pay and Salary
The 76-cent myth

Do women make less than men? The wage-gap ratio isn't the best gauge for pay discrimination, and overemphasizing it can undermine an important issue.

Meanwhile: Exploiting the gender gap
by Warren Farrell, International Herald Tribune (September 6, 2005)

Quote:
When the Rochester Institute of Technology surveyed business owners with MBAs from one top business school, they found that money was the primary motivator for only 29 percent of the women, versus 76 percent of the men. Women put a premium on autonomy, flexibility (25- to 35-hour weeks and proximity to home), fulfillment and safety.

After years of research, I discovered 25 differences in the work-life choices of men and women. All 25 lead to men earning more money, but to women having better lives.

High pay, as it turns out, is about tradeoffs. Men's tradeoffs include working more hours (women work more around the home); taking more dangerous, dirtier and outdoor jobs (garbage collecting, construction, trucking); relocating and traveling; and training for technical jobs with less people contact (like engineering)....

There are 80 jobs in which women earn more than men - positions like financial analyst, radiation therapist, library worker, biological technician, motion picture projectionist. Female sales engineers make 143 percent of their male counterparts; female statisticians earn 135 percent.

Does success make women less marriageable to men? In some cases, the answer is yes: Most women like to "marry up," and that is harder to do if a woman is on the top floor of her profession.
But a bigger problem simply may lie in successful women's lack of planning for marriage, said Carrie Lukas, director of policy at the Independent Women's Forum.

i've been tempted to use it a few times since i've come to japan.
what's stopping me is that i don't know how it will be recorded on the time sheet.

there's a stamp for a regular day off, but for a period?
(an angry face, perhaps?)

so far, i just call in sick (and by "sick" i mean i take a regular day off and not a sick day).
