Anyone who has used a KB ATM in the past few weeks will have noticed the new option on the right of the menu for "Overseas Remittance."
I went to the branch outside Yeouido station on line 5 to register for this option. It took about 10 minutes and worked fine that day- the fee was 5,000 won for the transfer and it arrived at my Canadian account in a few days.
Today I tried sending home a larger amount- 6 million won. It didn't work so I went to a teller. I was at the branch outside Sookmyung Women's University station on line 4. The teller told me that the maximum I can transfer through the ATM is $5,000. I told her that the ATM said the maximum per day is 6 million won, not $5,000. She replied that the maximum is 6 million in won, but 5,000 in dollars.
I've tried to stop asking "why" in Korea, but I couldn't help and inquired why this is. She replied she didn't know. Feeling sarcastic I continued: "so the limit is 5,000 in Canadian dollars. What about US dollars? Japanese Yen? British Pounds? Euros? Oh, what is it in Mexican Pesos? Chilean Pesos?"
After clearing up her confusion over what a "peso" was, she told me that the number is 5,000 in any foreign currency. Even currencies that are weak enough such that 5,000 units of it is very small, such as the Mexican peso. Frustrated, I took my card and walked out.
Yes, I could have done it through the teller, but the whole point of registering to wire money through the ATM was so that I wouldn't have to do it through a teller anymore. Why can't I send the equivalent to 6 million won in any currency? Why does it have to convert to less than 5,000 units of a foreign currency? |

| This sounds like a very convenient and useful service from KB bank, Im at a loss why you sarcastically complained to the teller. |

I wouldn't complain if it were a maximum of 6 million won. What I find idiotic is that it's 6 million own if and only if it converts to 5000 units or less of any foreign currency.
If they're going to have the latter limit, why bother having the first at all?
And why does the ATM screen only list the former limit? |

| Sounds like a good new service. Cheap too. It also sounds like the teller didn't have a clue. |

| Good question. Does this work with regular cards or do we need the coveted "global" cards? |

You didn't perhaps ask her 5000 in Zimbabwean dollars as an example?
Just checking. |

I got an ATM card from Itaewon KB. I just went to the Yeoido branch and asked for an international one and was told the one I have is international. I asked him to check and he did.
I'm going to mail it to my parents to test it. |
