With all this talk of religious wack-jobs in American politics, have you ever noticed its atheist counterpart?

Is there such a thing, and have you ever come across one?

Wouldn't that be a communist? Maybe a "pagan" eco-loon? Post modernist?

How about this one?

Quote:

The final reason not to support Barr is because he is religious. Government employment should not require passing religious tests because that would make the government a theocracy, which is just another way to spell tyranny. However, political candidates should have to answer for their religious beliefs. They should explain why they believe in something without any evidence. Of course, there is no logical explanation; religion is inherently irrational. Therefore, Barr is irrational, especially in regards to his morality.

The core of a religion is its moral code. However, religion is irrational; thus, the morality that follows is irrational. Since every action is a moral action, every action committed by a religious person is based on irrationality. Consequently, supporting religious candidates for political offices is to support irrationality within the government an institution requiring the utmost reason to function properly and virtuously.

There are certainly atheist whack jobs. But they're rarely given the mike in American politics. The fundies tend to have all the money.

As a fellow atheist, I find this argument disgusting. I would go so far as to say that people who reject science shouldn't be in Government, but religious belief is very common and very human.

There are pretty good precedents of some religious beliefs causing problems: I understand Reagan had a minster for the environment who thought that Jesus' second coming, made protecting the environment irrelevant. And then you have George Bush and his mission from God.

Atheists aren't always better. I doubt Putin is a religious chap, and Stalin certainly wasn't. But they don't go around killing people to deconvert them.

Well, as the polls clearly show, black people and women are now ready for the highest seat in government provided they believe in god.

It would seem that atheist-whack-jobism doesn't have a chance in hell (pun intended) at this point. All humans are created equal, but you have to believe in a higher being to be entrusted with world-destroying nukes.

Moreover, I wouldn't expect to see atheist-whack-jobism come into its own in the states before Europe. My sources indicate it's still pretty far behind Jedism and Islam, either of which will imminently drown out anything else there.

We're still wrestling with healthcare, and atheist whack jobs tend to like healthcare, which means we won't be getting it anytime soon because it's also communist.

Rather than concern yourself with atheist whack-jobism, I recommend finding a way to profit from American corporate prostitution. It'll produce far better results.

An excellent bit of reasoning, except for the part I italicized, which is stupid.

You don't hear about atheists barricading themselves in compounds, molesting the children inside said compounds, shooting it out with police/FBI/ATF/the neighbors, or blowing up federal buildings or abortion clinics.

The atheists say a lot of things, but the leader board on the US kill count goes to the Christian fundamentalists.
