I'm considering attending this year's conference, but I don't know what to expect. Have any of you been to this sort of thing? Is it worth the money?

Is it worth the money? Wait a few days and it may very well be. In dollars, that is.

Might just have to show up at this shindig.

Some people think so and some people don't.

I go every year and out of the presentations I see, generally there are only 2 or 3 that I don't get much out of.

I do, however, often hear people describe different presentations as useless whereas I thought they were great. It really depends on your interests and approaches to teaching.

Kotesol also puts out an annual academic journal. Can anyone tell me when it comes out, and when is the deadline for a call for papers? Also, must you be a member to submit articles?

Last year's was great. Even if 90% of the presentations have no relevance to what you teach there are still plenty of worth-while ones to see. It's the only place where you can spend a day listening to people discuss how to teach to the same age group as you do *in a Korean context*. You can read all the articles you want by someone who's taught in Eastern Europe or American public schools and just won't get the same level of first-hand experience.

The presentations are interesting - and the duff ones provide a good bonding experience for the people who sat through them. This year the programme is designed to allow more time for networking betwen sessions. The publishers' display area is also a popular draw, and in previous years there has also been a job centre for teachers to check out employers and drop off their resumes.
