I've met many Koreans who think they are fluent enough to judge someone's English ability and I've also met many foreigners who claim to be fluent enough in Korean to judge someone's Korean. Not to mention the ones who can't speak a lick of English or Korean but has the balls to judge someone's English/Korean skills. Don't you think it's absurd to judge someone's language skills unless you're fluent in the language yourself? I say fluent or near fluent.

I find it patronizing when I speak Korean and Koreans don't think it's good enough and start speaking a few words of English. As if their few words of broken English are better than my conversational sentences of Korean. Rolling Eyes

When they do this, I continue to speak Korean because there's NO FREAKING way any communication is getting done if they have to speak English. If you don't believe me trying speaking completely in English and watch them clam up in silence. Laughing

I believe ALOT of it is that many Koreans are insecure about foreigners learning their language and being better than Koreans who try to learn English and are failing.

What's wrong with judging someone's language ability? I mean, yeah, it makes you out to be a *beep*, but if someone obviously can't speak the language... I mean, so long as you know your ability is far worse...

I meant don't judge someone whose language ability is far superior than yours. Because ultimately the one with the superior language ability will have the advantage.

I speak a couple other languages besides English much more relevent in the world than Korean. I speak Korean a bit more than enough to get by and I'm just too busy making money to have the time to learn it better. That's all there is to it.

Korean is among the hardest languages to learn for English speakers, in the same category as Mandarin Japanese and Arabic.

Given how easy the script is here in comparison to these other languages, I'd have to say it's the grammar and sociolinguistic factors that put Korean in the same category, making everyday conversation the most difficult out of any language in the world besides Japanese.

I find Korean hard because there is a special word for just about every kind of action whereas in conversational english we often string together simple words.

However, if Joe Dresnok can learn fluent Korean, I gotta think it is within all of our grasps.
