|
|
Just want to know what posts have been informative to you and in what way. What things have you learned here on this forum? Anything enlightening? What posts would you consider as being of value, and why?
Not that I'm looking for any acclaim or any critical remarks about the stuff posted here. I just want to know if anyone here has learned anything, if they've found something of help or encouragement here, and if they haven't, what would they like to hear more or less of?
I think some of the political disputes about Iraq and American Policy have been helpful to me. But I'm also sick of it.
More knowledge about understanding Korea and Koreans would be helpful to me. |

I've learned that not everyone feels the same way about corn on pizza.
I've learned that dating bartenders doesn't bring happiness but on the other hand it provides loads of comic relief for strangers on the internet.
I've learned that posting your real name, primary email address, your picture, and/or your website here can be a very very bad thing.
By far the most helpful posts are Waterbaby's FAQs |

| Nothing as far as I know except for a few guys putting things like "All Koreans suck dick" etc. in the guestbook comments a couple of years back. I haven't updated the thing since 1999, and it's just a free geocities webpage anyway, so I decided there wasn't much point in putting a link to it. [i.e. My learning regarding websites etc. came more from observation than personal experience.] |

I came to the board when I had already been here two years so I didnt' look to the board to learn stuff. I figure I live here, I don't need to go to a board to learn about Koreans, and if I want to go deep with the culture I read a book. I study the language and go with a K girl, that's about as deep as I wanna go. Politics bores me silly.
The best thing about this board for me has been meeting Itaewonguy and Eamo ... |

| I learned to not reveal to much personal information on a message board because you never know what kind of twits are lurking around. |

Good lesson. This is why I won't go to any of those "gatherings".
There are a few people from this board I wouldn't mind meeting, but I'd say a one on one type meeting would be best. |

| I just learned a lot of little odds and ends pertaining to work or legal issues for foreigners living in Korea. |

| I read everything Walter Mitty says with reverence. I learned a lot about gaming in general from his posts. |

See my post on the latest gathering for my sentiments which totally agree with you.
Call me naive but I like to believe that people are generally good - guess I was wrong. |

i first started reading this board 6 months after moving here. since mine was a decade long induction into korean culture (i was married here in '92), i fit both the lifer and newbie mentalities. i remember two posters most clearly. both women whose comments were opposite in tone. i related to one in my present "eyes wide open and generous" mentality, the other i could identify with because her conflicted sentiments so related to mine during my early years of exposure to korea and koreans. in general, it's nice to go somewhere and find folks with a similar cultural background who share the Korean experience in so many different ways and from such a great variety of perspectives.
to this day, i glean tips here and there on both getting along in daily activities (one example is the thread on sauna protocol) and teaching methods. off the top of my head i've cut and pasted the 'wormgame' for future use, got links to some cool holiday sights, textbook (as well as various other type book) recommendations, and because of the movie threads, i've downloaded and enjoyed a couple of films that i otherwise would not have heard of.
it's interesting to learn from fellow westerners from places other than the north amerian continent. I even manage to get something from even the most seemingly counter-productive vanity style posts simply because they too get me thinking in new ways.
Thanks everyone and Happy New Year!! |

I learnt that people love talking about whether Korean girls are better than western girls... ad freaking nauseum
I also learnt that everyone here thinks they are an expert on Korea (and indeed the whole of asia) because they've spent 1 year in Korea (barely leaving Seoul) and once holidayed in thailand..
Oh yeah, and people love generalising (or perhaps we can't help it).. |

Yeah. I wish he would post more about that stuff. He does it so casually. Like he wakes up, has breakfast, gets a soapy rubadub, goes to work.............
