I'm leaving for 2009 and I'll be returning in 2010.

But I thought this would be a nice place to discuss the new contract that
EPIK has published.

Apparently Airfare is being dropped in place of the Entrance allowance
which is a flat 1.3Mwon, and is intended to cover your airfare and other
expenses, med check and CBC etc.

Then for renewal there is no more R/T ticket with home leave but there is
a 2Mwon renewal bonus. Before you got a bonus 2Mwon plus R/T airfare.

Am I understanding this correctly?

You actually get less for renewal?

So your better off ending the contract taking a longer vacation and
returning on a new contract.

Yes... no more airfare - instead a 'flat', 1.3 mil., "Entrance Allowance" (med check and CBC were never covered).

Yes.

Jandar wrote:

No. Before, you got R/T airfare. The 2 mil. "Renewal Allowance" replaces the old airfare.

Not really.

That will depend on the cost of airfare (my 'renewal' airfare last year - August - was almost 3 mil.)

Highly unlikely because you will loose your two-week, paid 'home leave', will not build 'seniority' for a pay raise and will have to 'jump through all the hoops' involved in getting a new visa.

Also, with holidays, the change from fourteen working to twenty-one calendar days will 'suck in' many people because it 'sounds' better. In reality, for most people, they will get less time off because holidays must be taken in: a ten-day block in summer, and an eleven-day block in winter. Figure it out... unless you're willing to start holidays on a Tuesday and end on a Thursday you will get less time off. Who wants to work the Monday before holidays and the Friday after? Plus, you will not be able to combine holidays with weekends (before and/or after), and/or 'extend' due to statutory holidays because of the use of the term "calendar" days - they're not stupid, but the know most GETs are.

They have also reduced the number of days for sick leave from fifteen to eleven.

All-in-all, a worse contract than 2008!

Hopefully, this is my last year in EPIK, so I am not really "concerned" about the new 2009 contract. I heard the housing allowance for the POE I live in went up and we get an extra day or two at the most of vacation but the rest sounds the same.

Pretty much S.S.D.D.

Re: the 2 mil resign bonus

You get your severance pay (2m)
and a resign bonus (2m)

So if you stay a second year, when you hit 12 months, you'll get 4mil (I think...)

But fewer days off, and no vacation time to go home and see friends/family take time off etc.

Pretty sucky.

I'm with GEPIK (basically the same crappy contract) and I won't be re-signing.

It's certainly not keeping up with inflation. I'm gone.

I am coming back in 2010.

I'm finishing two years with EPIK.

I'll probably be going Hogwan on my next trip,
shoring up some connections as I leave.

If the EPIK contract gets better for 2010 then
I'll go EPIK again but for now I'm looking at Hogwans.

I'm hearing that EPIK will jack-up the base salary by 200K for all levels.

I wish GEPIK would introduce the allowances into their contracts.
I'd much prefer getting paid a set amount as an "exit bonus" and plan my travels how I please than be forced to take a ticket home or forfeit. (in the case of teachers who don't renew but choose to stay in Korea)

This year I renewed my contract and my round-trip airfare cost 1.3mill, with 2 mill as a renewal bonus, that would have been 700K in my pocket. (or the fact that when I started my job, I was already in Korea, so the school didn't pay airfare, another 1.3mill in my pocket)

They have to give the two weeks home leave. It was put in there to stop people from taking big breaks between contracts.

Before they put that in people use to take one and two month holidays between contracts and they needed to find a way to get people to stick around.

Yes you do but you pay your own R/T airfare.

The 2008 contract you got a Renewal bonus 1 month pay plus a R/T ticket home leave combo. That's a deal killer.

For 2009? Because they can't get teachers?
