| I watched 워낭소리 at Myeongdong's Joongang Cinema on the weekend. It had English (and Korean) subtitles. |

The lady from Korea4 Expats once called CGV to ask if they would be showing a particular movie with English-subtitles. They told her that there would not be enough of a demand from the KOREAN MARKET, so no, they would not be adding subtitles. Yes folks, the English-subtitled movies at Yongsan are only the really big movies and their subtitled showings are meant to take the excess demand from the regular showings. But, by adding subtitles, they can claim they are doing it for the foreign market out of goodwill.
I went to see shingijeon last year at Yongsan with English-subtitles, and out of the packed audience there was maybe 3 other non-Korean nationals. |

I saw speed scandal last month in Myeongdong with english subtitles. I was the only foreigner there. Frankly I don't know why they don't do this with all movies around that area anyway. When the movies are released on DVD they always have english subtitles, so what does it matter if you pay someone to make the subtitles now or later. Is it really that big of an extra cost to print half a dozen copies of the films with subs?
What's playing right now with English subs and where?
Lotte cinema is nice and advertises directly on their website what is playing with english subs, but I don't think CGV does. |

So did I. What a steaming pile of turds that movie was. Even the Koreans in the audience were laughing in embarrassment at the dialogue and plot. |

Speed scandal was hilarious. I really liked it. The kid was brilliant.
I'll watch it again when its up for download.
I really hope they'll start putting up more movies with subs. It would be nice to be able to watch more korean movies with my friends and not always english movies. |

| Why don't they advertise the English subtitles as a way to help Koreans learn English-ee? They did it with the tourist bus tours. There are about a million hogwan mommies who would push, shove, and elbow anyone and everyone to get their babies into the cinema. |

The really fucked up thing is that last year, I rented Secret Sunshine, that movie that won awards at the trash can festival.
The subtitles (DVD this is) were in ONLY KOREAN.
Koreans can decide whether they want to encourage us to watch their films or not. No more of this half-assing. |

Yea, I downloaded this and it didn't come with subs even then. I had to get some home made subs off the net. They seemed OK.
Also, surely they can come up with some type of technology that means only you can see the subs. I understand why they don't have eng subs most of the time because I bet people complain about it. I know Korean subs on an English movie annoys me. Maybe some of those video glasses. There should be a simpler and more elegant solution than that though. |

The only solution with current technology would be some kind of filter. a non-visible light made visible only by cheap geeky glasses is the only choice. |
