Recently president Obama visited Africa.

On his trip one time Obama compared S.Korea with his father's homeland Kenya.
He said Kenya was doing better economically than S.Korea when his father went US in 60's. Now, S.Korea is 32th richest country while Kenya stay as one of the poorest countries in world.

What made korea become one of the fastest growing wealthy countries ? I say it's combination of visionary of great leadership someone like a former president Pak Jung-Hee and very competitive education system and nature of hard working Korean.

Years ago some korean have wondered if " SamSung " can take over " Sonny " in world market, well, many doubted, but today SamSung completely took over Sonny in world market.
Also name recognition of SamSunig is much much higher than Sonny.

Now some Korean wonder if Hyundai oneday can take over Toyoda in world market.
I say it is going to happen within next 10 years.
Last year total sale of Hyundai cars was 20 % of total sale of Toyoda, this year Hyundai already sold 30% of total sale of Toyoda.

Well, Hyundai may need a few more years to take over Toyoda, but it's already happening with Nissan, Hyundai already sold more than Nisssan this year.

Hyundai built $$ 1.2 billion plant in Mongomary, Alabama and now Kia is building $$ 1.2 billion plant in West Point, Georgia.

Korean should not satisfy until Korea become one of top 10 richest countries in the world.

I think Korea right now has a right leadership ( Lee Myung-Bak ) in tough economy situation.

You've got your thinking a little bit upside down: The reason Korea was able to become the 32nd richest country in the world in 2009 is that Korea isn't located in Africa.

Pretty amazing that it took 5,000 years to become #32. Oh, and lets not forget the $10,000,000,000 gift from the USA to SK in the seventies. Oh, and lets not forget Japan giving SK the technology to start their own automotive industry.

Yep, Korea is #32! Dae Han Minguk!!!

Koreans deserve to be extremely proud of their economic advancement of the last 50 years.. No people has worked harder for the advancement of the motherland tyhan Koreans.
However they shouldnt forget that without the aid and continued protection of the USA this "miracle" would have been impossible no matter how hard they have worked.

Korea has done well, but comparing it to Kenya isn't fair. Korea has had a lot of help over the years-- as somebody already mentioned, Kenya, like the rest of Africa, has been completely ignored by the West...

Maybe the chaebol have made a lot of money, but the price that the average Korean uni graduate has to pay for living the standard life here is horrible.

Overpriced rat hole apartments, overpriced everything. It's amazing what the average consumer has to pay to get anything decent in Korea.

Because communism never looked like spreading much through Africa.

You'll find the resources of the western powers, especially USA, since WWII, have been spent trying to stop the spread of a political ideology. Communism.

If you have communist neighbors, but your government stays capitalist, then you can get lots of yankee dallahs!!

The only part I agree with is that Samsung is a more recognized name than Sonny. I would never buy a Sonny.

I guess someone already answered this, but I'll expand.

Basically, they didn't want Japan to fall to the communists, so if Korea had become Communist, it would have been a serious problem.

So the Americans provided training, education, money and military power enough to keep S. Korea stable and help to build it up. They did this because they needed a strong ally in Eastern Asia. All that Park Chung-hee really did to help Korea was open relations with Japan-- something the Americans had been pushing for for a very long time.

Japan was, despite its defeat, still potentially a major power in the world... if it had fallen to the communists, it would have been a real threat to the West.

On the other hand, Africa at the end of WWII was made up mostly of former Imperial European colonies... none of which had proven profitable, hospitable or worthwhile. With the tremendous cost of rebuilding their own nations after the war, it was easier to just forget about that part of the world-- which is exactly what happened.

The Americans never really took an interest in Africa... and they were about the only nation left who could afford to build a nation from scratch...

African countries have received, and continue to receive billions of dollars from the West, yet they have squandered it, largely due to inherent corruption.

and nature of hard working Korean.

i'm sorry but i take issue with this. i had this debate with a korean professor the other day in class (how it came to this in class i don't know)

me - statistics usually show koreans work more hours but are generally less productive at the workplace

him - yes, you should understand. we got where we are today because we worked hard. people in the west and other countries should use korea as a model blah blah koreans work hard blah blah

me - so are you saying that we in the west DONT work hard? is that what you would like to say

him - yes

this 'hard working korean' thing has to stop. Do Koreans think they built all of this stuff by themselves?

and if koreans work so hard, why did the brits own most of the world for an almost 200 year period? wasn't this working hard? who came up with the industrial revolution? wasn't this working hard? who won two world wars (and fought many others including the Korean war) - wasn't this working hard? who actually invented all of the products Koreans are famous for making (ships, computers, TV's, cars) - wasn't this working hard?

us brits (and americans too) have worked harder than anyone else for the past 300 years to make the world the place it is today, and for koreans to believe that we in the west are lazy when compared to Koreans is just plain laughable, pure and simple. I'm sick of being told that we in the west are lazy and that Koreans are these hard-working, do or die, sacrificial lambs. the fact is - if korean bosses weren't so evil to their employees, forcing to them stay late (where they actually spend most of their time in pointless meetings/surfing the net/smoking outside) most koreans wouldn't have worked so 'hard'. It's called fudging the numbers.

I swear, the next time in class I hear 'hard working Koreans' i'm just going to lose it!

this too - do you really think that america and the UK wouldn't be where they are today if we didn't 'work hard'?

I'm so TIRED of this!

plenty of countries have worked hard - harder than Koreans throughout history. Your own country for one........ Why can't people take a bit of pride in their own country's achievements for once and stop acting like the Koreans are the hardest working people on the face of the planet............
