I've heard some anecdotes about how US citizens can go onto US military bases and shop at the stores there and do other things. Somebody once said there are banks on the bases and stuff like that too.

Does anyone know anything about this? Are there really some sort of perks to be had on the military bases if you are an American? Or is it just a bunch of crew-cut sporting goons walking around?

Thanks.

Again: No matter what your citizenship is, you can ONLY get on to the base when you are accompanied by an active/retired service member who has a valid military ID.

You can buy a year pass if American, it's really expensive though, maybe 10 million won for one year? I forget exactly; the owner of Whatthebook used to have one. You can also take two people with you on base, as long as they have suitable ID.

Wrong.

Read my post above. Also, how do the Koreans who work on base get, uh, on base then?

Ah I see.

Some guy in Busan told me he went shopping at a military supply store and got to but a lot of American food and stuff on a base. Maybe he had a military friend help him get in there and he just didn't mention that part?

Cool. Do you know if it's worth it and what you can do on base?

Can I buy stuff?

Can I fire some ICBMs at Afghanistan?

Can I get a flat-top haircut?

What does it get me? What is happening on these bases exactly?

I forget exactly, but you have access to most things except some shopping? I can ask the owner of Whatthebook, he is Stateside now so I have no idea when he will get back to me.

Being on base is like being in America I guess, doesn't feel like Korea at all. You have to tip at restaurants though, and can pay for stuff there in Yankee dollah too of course.

Why does this sound like the time in grade 12 when I sold a freshman a pool pass to the pool on the roof that the school didn't have? Razz

I think I agree. If it really is 10 million won then there is no way I would pay for it. I probably wouldn't even pay 1 mill. I thought it was free. I'll stop by the base and ask them sometime I guess.

Okay turd face, I should have put that in there: No matter your citizenship, you can ONLY get onto base when accompanied by a base employee or active/retired service member with a valid ID.

And, turd face, show me a link to that 10 million won a year pass?

when will you morons get it, having the blue us passport doesnt mean squat on us military bases. those facilities are for those who earn the right by covering our sorry butts in case the norks attack etc. also do you people remember a little event called 9/11? you really think the pentagon wants anybody on our bases without a purpose after that?

no amount of money will get a "pass" to get on base. and even if you get somebody to sign you in you wont be able to go to the grocery store as there are ration cards in order to keep stuff off the black market.

man some days i think schertzer was right about people here

Can't find a link, nonetheless the owner of Whatthebook was not military or working on base and he had a pass; he took me and my Aussie buddy to the base in Yongsan and we had dinner at the Dragon Hill Lodge and drank microbrewed beers there. Why would I bother making something inane like this up?

Well i've heard at least 5 people mention stuff about getting on base. I've even seen pics of ESL teachers I know on base posing with tanks and stuff.

Are they all lying? Did they photoshop the tanks and soldiers into all those pics with them?

I know that you CAN get on base. That's not even debateable. I'm just wondering about the details.

i never said you couldnt get on base i've been on base several times and have eaten at dragon hill, each time i've had to be signed in by somebody with a usfk id, leave my arc at the gate and was not allowed to buy anything at a commissary without a ration card. my friend could buy me stuff but it would come off his ration allowance

its your moronic claim that just because we are us citizens we can get access to base and buy whatever we want that is so full of it its not funny. those facilities and acess to those goods are for those who come here to defend the us and korea and deserve every benefit they get. goods are limited to prevent flooding of the korean market with duty free goods.

you want free access to base and all the perks that go with it. i suggest you go to the local recruiting station and enlist
