if you are leaving without plans on coming back, before your contract is up, do you need a letter of release at the airport to show immigration or any other kind of paperwork?

Yes of course. If you dont have a letter of release, they will detain you in their airport lockup until your employer shows up. You will go to the immigration ofice where you will be fitted with a GPS ankle braclet so they will know if you stray from your job again.

You are free to leave at any time, (unless you have criminal charges pending). There is no need for a letter of release to leave Korea.

A letter of release is useful to obtain a new job in Korea under some circumstances. If you are not coming back, it would be a useless document.

Did you get your diploma back? I would hate to hear that you are leaving without your diploma.

You only need a LOR when you want to change schools. Otherwise, just go to the airport with ticket and baggage in-hand and have a good flight. Unless you are wanted by the authorities, all I expect they will do, as another poster said, is to cancel your visa in your passport and confiscate your ARC.

They will likely fine you (100,000 won or thereabouts) if you don't.
