My friend back in the States just linked me to this. I thought it was really interesting. What do you all think?

A South Korean man has been fined one million won ($865; 520) for making discriminatory remarks against an Indian professor.
The conviction is the country's first involving racist remarks towards a foreigner, Incheon District Court officials told local media.
The man yelled racist comments and said "Arab! Arab!" at the Indian man while on a bus in July, the judge said.
The professor felt publically insulted by the comments, he added.
The 31-year-old South Korean had objected to Bonogit Hussain talking loudly on a bus.
Mr Hussain had been in South Korea since 2007 and had studied for a master's degree from Seoul's SungKongHoe University, later working as a research professor there.
Park could have faced up to one year in prison and 2 million won in fines for public insult, Associated Press reported. |

one million won fine isn't excessive and hopefully sends a signal, though is the korean media covering it?
interesting that we hear of this first through the BBC. |

Actually, this topic has already been much discussed in several threads. I guess the only thing new in the article is that the court case has been concluded. Frankly, I am happy for Dr. Hussain. Its not every day that the Korean justice system rules in favor of a foreigner.
And before anyone starts complaining about free speech and so forth, let us not forget that Mr. Park also assaulted a Korean lady who was traveling with Dr. Hussain. |

Assault and saying something are two totally different things. |

If he were fined for assault, I would have been happy, even though I think a much stiffer fine should be levied against him. But being fined for shouting "Arab!"? It's a little disconcerting IMO. |

Yes, I am aware of that, but I guess that I am more happy with the fact that something was done even if done for debatable reasons. |

I'm guessing that the Korean lady did not push the assault charge...and that the other very offensive insults that were hurled are not being reported by the K-media. |

Assault is not battery. Insulting somebody can be construed as assault, at least in the US. |

Oh, wow. I didn't know there was also an assault. Does anyone have the news link to that part of the story? |

A poster who knows Dr. Hussain, first alerted us to this information. His user id is edmundo. Also, I remember reading a small news snippet somewhere which included the assault in the report, but I cannot seem to find that news report at the moment. |

Are court imposed fines in Korea similar to parking and speeding fines? Meaning if the person doesn't pay, then they just don't pay, end of story. |

well I wasn`t expecting this outcome as I thought the Korean guy would get away with it as they usually do......so in a way it`s a half decent start to win with a very slight bit of shaming for Korea in the international world . |

a very unsatisfying ending, but considering the circumstances probably the best one that could've been hoped for.
I'm waiting for the day where I read a headline titled:
Korean man insults and screams at a foreigner and his Korean girlfriend and gets his ass kicked.
if the same (or another) Mr. Kim wants to give it a shot with yours truly, I'll be happy to oblige. |
