Because gender is more complicated than that and there are some grey areas. |

How can it be that difficult to know? You either have one or you don't. |

an X chromosome? Actually, you can have one, or none, or two, or even three. And sometimes the expression of X-chromosome characteristics is blocked by mutation or other factors, so the body goes to its default state - mostly female. This means that you can have an inch-long clitoris with a head, or a fully-formed *beep* and also a vagina below it. Or you can have a *beep* and two breasts. Or, well, the possibilities are endless really.

That's pretty much it. There haven't been that many sideshow freaks in the Olympics before, so it's an unexpected phenomenon |

There are definitely lots of options, which make this issue complicated... but I'm pretty sure you have to have at least one X chromosome. The X has a lot of stuff on it that the Y doesn't... hence all the X-linked diseases (like why mostly men are colourblind). But most people with trisomy of XXY, or XYY wouldn't even know it.
A lot of stuff is hormonal as well. A lot of the problem with this issue is determining which combination of factors should determine whether you're a man or woman for sports purposes. Hormones, appearance, DNA... |

YY is possible. However, too much genetic material is needed from the X to enable a YY to live much past fertilization. |

The case of Caster Semenya is a great argument against "Why can't their be inter-gender sports?" questions posed by wanna-be feminists. She proves the point. |

Sex, not gender.
We already know there aren't just two sexes- that's what's with the fancy words like 'hermaphrodite' etc.
Drop the false divisions and treat athletes as athletes. |

Yes just have one gold, silver and bronze medal for each event. There should be no separate races and competetions for men and women and others. |

Pretty bad that so many women athletes look like men. Something seriously wrong with that. |

Hermaphrodite? In my book it's just men, women, and freaks.
Those in the freak category are born to be dancers in bawdy shows or to be bearded women in carnivals. |
