We've got a dinner tonight to welcome the new principal of our school. I've only got 3 1/2 weeks left on my contract and so I'm not too terribly worried about getting brownie points.
I'm curious, does anyone have any killer good excuses for blowing off work dinners? |

Did you just hear about it today? Simple: prior plans. you have a girlfriend.
sorry, let me know earlier next time.

Haha, no I heard about it on Friday. I just really don't want to go now. Should have told them an excuse before, but it sounded okay back then.
Honestly, does anyone really care if you show up anyways? The foreigners always just sit in the corner while they make grand speeches in Korean. |

Is your school's staff bad?
Whenever my school schedules a free dinner/lunch/food-related event, I'm for it. We're not the richest school, but our principal manages to choose pretty good places. I wouldn't think of not going to one of these functions if I was actually free. I've always had a good time.
I don't know anything about your situation or school so good luck getting out of the dinner.
Try this: Korean food is too greasy for me. |

that's one of the dinners I'd go to, though I understand you only have 3 weeks left and couldn't care less.
still, seems like a basic courtesy kind of thing. With all new brass at my school I suspect I will be subjected to this ritual shortly
I suppose I'll just "endure" it.. one more time. |

| Just say you're busy and you're so sorry. I hate school dinners and I'm not really that fond of Korean food, so I told my school I have Crohn's disease and can't eat anything spicy or vinegary. It's never come up again. |

that would be nice if you really want to eat whatever it is they'll be serving (almost never the case for me).
and of course, your legs will fall asleep and joint stiffen up from sitting on the floor for an hour plus.
I sometimes feel bad that I dread these dinners as much as I do. (though I've enjoyed several in small group settings, where they usually take me out for stuff they know I like (like grilled beef or an occassional samgyapsal) |

Word up! For everyone over the height of 6 foot 4 inches, sitting crossed legged on the floor is a pain.
I decided to go with "left my USB at the girlfriend's house. Have to take a 2 hour subway ride to get it. I need it for class tomorrow. So sorry.
Dinners aren't that painful - good food and all. Just tired of 30 Koreans staring at me to see what I do and do not eat. Then listen to a 30 minute speech in Korean. It's not like I'm a new guy - been here 11 months, think they'd chill with me.
I would advise people in the beginning and middle to try your best to attend dinners to help score drunken brownie points, but after you hit month 11, who gives a rats a$@.
Here's a great excuse I thought of:
"I have an appointment to get my back shaved and waxed"
This will blow their minds and they will probably ask no questions. |

Honestly, take a *male* VP or co-teacher aside and be like "Hay... I know I said I was gonna come to this thing, and I really wanna go, but I got a line on this Canadian girl, and ...ya know.. You know I really wanna go, but.. I'm trying to get a little sumptin-sumptin..."
It may sound rude. It may be crass. But before you get through that little monologue, any guy will be like 'oh yeah say no more, say no more, good luck!!' |

Tell them you'll be there. Then choose one of these:
I got lost.
Traffic.
Had to take important family call from back home.
