iv been offered a job at a hagwon that seems pretty reputable and im all ready to accept it. i told them this but asked if i could just speak to a current teacher in order to get a first hand account of what its like to work there. i was told that i would only be given the contact details by the HR department once they had received my documents and the employment process was already on the go. is this a regular deal, or are they trying to hide something? i just think that if there was nothing untoward going on they'd be pretty upfront. can't really work it out. any insight anyone can give me? |

Personally I would definitely see this as a red flag....I wouldn't work at a hagwon without speaking to a current or former teacher first. |

hmmmm, yeah, it does smell a bit fishy. i've found the number of the branch online, was considering just giving them a call and seeing what they say... |

you don't have to justify why you want to speak to another teacher - they know already that you might ask for this.
either they will provide one for you - and chances are, it may be one they approve of ahead of time, and you still have to take the info you receive with a grain of salt, or they will change their mind and find someone else.
if they totally refuse, well, like the first responder said: RUN! |

This is odd but the RUN comments are just people knee jerk responded.
Smarter course of action:
Request contact information again and if they refuse ask why.
If they cannot provide a reasonable reason (I have no idea what that would be however), then you can politely tell them you are sorry but you cannot accept their job offer. |

Politely state that other hagwons [ don't provide details, especially if they ask] had no problem giving contact information, and as a result you will not be working for them but one of the honest and upfront hagwons instead.
That will be a win-win-win, as you will be helping the next foreigner in contact with said dodgy hagwon; you will be helping said hagwon in proper employment practices. |
