I don't get it.
Even the discounted flights are twice as much as last year? What the hell is going on? |

Depends on WHEN you are flying.
If your travel dates are during the Korean PS summer vacation (July 15-Aug. 30) then you will pay through the nose for your flight.
2nd week of Sept they will fall to about 300-400k (return).
Start looking now for your winter dates if you want cheap tickets.
Peak is Dec 15-Jan 30 with a shoulder to Mar.2.

I'm seeing $550 US to Bangkok in my searches with a stop over in Guangzou, China. Only cheap flights around here are on China Eastern in all of my various searches. |

China Eastern doesn't fly direct to Bangkok.
You were complaining that Cebu Pacific's fares to Cebu don't provide a significant savings over KAL. In fact, I checked on your hypothetical August vacation and you can save 272,000 won by flying Cebu Pacific. See:

From what I've seen Thai Air must be trying to do a P.R repair and discounting fares for July because of the recent troubles in Bangkok. I booked a ticket for July and was given June fares as an estimate by my travel agent; 1-way 465 000. She told me she had to wait for July fares to be announced and I assumed it would be somewhat higher. She emailed me this week and with taxes it was 325 000 won. Exact same TG flight. |

Have you gone ahead and actually tried to book one of these? Somehow they all mysteriously get bumped up to $1000 once you actually go to the airline's site.... |

It's funny you mention that because many times when I click through as if I'm going to purchase the total price mysteriously increases on many flights, but not all. I'm looking at Expedia, Bing, and Vayama. By emailing Korean travel agents, I was able to get better quotes than on these sites. |

Along with the falling value of the won and the increasingly unaffordable airfares to southeast asian destinations, Korea is looking less and less like a good place to work. |

Agreed. The airfare to SE Asia from Korea is very expensive, especially when you factor in the relatively short flight time. It's made me change my plans after my contract is up. I've decided to take the plane ticket my school offers me back to the States and then catch a flight to Costa Rica. I can fly round trip for $350 from LAX. Cheaper than any flights I've seen going from Seoul to SE Asia.
It's too bad though. I think I would have rather vacationed in Thailand than Costa Rica. |

I was all excited for a cheap flight to Hanoi, then tried to book and it was nearly double the price. Tried a few different travel agents and they quoted me even more expensive prices. Guess it's an in-country summer vacation this year.... |

A record number of travelers are expected to fly overseas during the upcoming summer vacation season as more individuals can afford to spend extra cash abroad on the improving economy and the strengthening of the Korean won against the dollar and other foreign currencies.
Most travel industry watchers expect this year's figure to easily exceed the previous record set in 2007.
