YBM-
They don't know how many days vacation they're giving you? Really? They can't figure this out?

You have to pay rent? There goes a huge chunk of your 2 million.

CDI-
After training, if they don't like you they dump you. See ya!

7 days vacation and no holidays? Maybe you'll get those 7 days, but I doubt they would be consecutive.

"Special" classes? Prepare to work your ass off.

1 million in airfare? hahaha

Why do people keep going to these companies? Is it because they are so afraid of the smaller hogwons?

Less security? The consensus on this board seems to be that smaller hagwons have a greater chance of not paying on-time, going bankrupt., etc.. Anyone have referral for a good, smaller hagwon? Surprised

YBM will expect you to work overtime. The extra pay does buffer the rent.

Howdy;

I just got offered a place at April Hwamyeong, and one of their stipulations is I buy my airfare and it gets refunded... anyone have any luck negotiating this so they pay it?

I'll be broke if I have to Sad

Also - anyone have any views they'd care to share?

My first job was YBM. For the past 3 years I've lived in Busan, in Hwamyeong and I know the head foreign teacher at CDI.

Your first job is going to suck ass. Koreans aren't out to scam you like a 3 world country. Its just they've been F'd so many times by crazy foreigners they don't want to take any chances with airfare.

I know you won't take either offer and then you'll be out of time and eventually you'll be blacklisted.

Yes, recruiters also have an ESL cafe like us and yes they talk about the crazy people that waste their time and lead them on only to back out at the last minute.

I advise you to check out Starbucks. They offer health insurance even for part time workers.

Everything sucks ass in todays world..if it not one job it's the next... Shocked

It's all the same after awile...

But, I would love to work at starbucks... Very Happy all the coffe you can drink..Hell

yeah..(as opposed to going back to Korea and dealing with that shit

again). I only wish getting hired was as easy as it sounds.

I think they have alot of racial preferance too.

I've heard that CDI will work you to death, then chuck you because you couldn't keep up. Koreans really like to do that to you...they log the most weekly hours of any industrialized nation...up to 80 (irregardless of their 40 hour workweek law), yet they actually make less money in that time than nations that work 40. It's a macho thing with them, I guess.

I have a friend that liked working at YBM in Seoul.
