Starting next year, elementary, middle and high school students could have a new destination for their next field trip: the disputed Dokdo islets.
The Korean Federation of Teachers Association said yesterday that it was in discussions with cruise lines, including Daea Express Shipping, to begin field trip programs to Dokdo for the countrys students to coincide with the organizations Dokdo Day next year, set for Oct. 25, 2012.
The KFTA said school field trips on cruises would no doubt be a new adventurous experience for students, adding that they would also reduce teachers burden of chaperoning their charges around the clock as is often the case on school trips.
As school field trips on a cruise would provide students with a historical and educational experience, we ask the government and businesses to provide administrative and financial support for this program, said a KFTA official.

If I was a student going to Dokdo I'd take my fishing rod. |

So Korean teachers want to pack a whole bunch of kids on buses, drive them half way around the country, then put them on a boat to go look at a rock. These people think WE ARE THE UNQUALIFIED LOSERS! |

I see this as a good thing. We've all seen the glorified pictures they spread all over the place making it look like some kind of paradise. Now kids - the most objective observers of all - will get to see the uninhabitable, cold, windy, seagull-poop covered rocks for what they really are: uninhabitable, cold, windy and seagull-poop covered. Then maybe a generation down the road the hysteria will finally end. |

Unfortunately it's not just seagulls that are to blame (if Wiki is to be believed):
Quote: |
The sewage water treatment system established on the islets has malfunctioned and sewage water produced by inhabitants of Liancourt Rocks such as South Korean Coast Guard and lighthouse staff is being dumped directly into the ocean. Significant water pollution has been observed; sea water has turned milky white, sea vegetation is progressively dying off, and calcification of coral reefs is spreading. The pollution is also causing loss of biodiversity in the surrounding seas. In November 2004, eight tons of malodorous sludge was being dumped into the ocean every day. |

It's not necessarily a waste of time.
In theory if such an event was taught properly, with everything from history, to politics, to biology, meteorology and geology being involved, it might make sense.
The problem is it will involve anything but that in all likelihood.....
I mean my school once took a field trip out to an island rock, but it actually involved those things and was a great experience.
If its a bunch of stupid chants, songs, and rants then yeah, bring the fishing pole. |

8 TONS A DAY? I thought there were only like a handful of people living and working on Dokdo. They must be getting a LOT of fiber in their diets. |

This is a very dumb idea. These trips will almost certainly be done in place of the usual trips that kids take to either Jeju, or Gyeongju. If I were to stay here long enough and found that my kids' school was going to opt for this trip instead of those others, I'd be pretty upset. But I see some teachers are all for it as it would "reduce the burden" of chaperoning their students. |

First year students at my high school already took a trip to Dokdo earlier this year. At least that's what they'll say if you ask them where they went. In reality they went to Ulleungdo for a couple of days and on the way home the boat went past Dokdo so the students could see it.
So what does the article actually mean? Are they actually going to let the students get off the boat and walk around on Dokdo? Or are they just expanding the program that my students did to more schools? |

I wonder if the Japanese find it amusing how much they've gotten the Koreans to obsess over 2 meaningless rocks in the middle of the ocean. |
