|

So far I use Naver and search for segments of text I suspect are copied. It finds blogs and what not where example essays are often posted. Google is good for finding those idiots who copy directly from Wikipedia.
I still have stuff that I'm sure is copied and I can't seem to find the source. Anyone have any better methods? |

Talk to the students. Ask them about what they wrote. If they just copied, then there is a good chance they won't be able to tell you anything about it. You can then question them as to how they were able to write about it.
Another step would be to have the ones you think cheated re-write them in your presence. |

I never cared if my students cheated. If they did I just looked away and pretended I didn't see it. |

Process writing....
Make the students do multiple drafts and you can catch these things early on.
Also make sure they do journals and free writing so that you have a record of how they write.
Finally, use prompts that are hard to copy...making them personal in some way...at least for the first few assignments...again it gives you a record of their writing style. |

I fixed it for you.
You're not really a teacher if you don't care whether or not your students are cheating.
And please don't give me that crap that it's part of the culture here, that's just a cop out. |

Maybe teach them to properly research for a paper and cite their sources - depending on their age/level I guess. |

It's not worth my time and effort enforcing something that very few care about.
This is my teaching style. Since I "don't know" what's going on then hey everybody wins.
Just working for my next paycheck is all. I'm not going to rock the boat. |

Or actually teach either. |

Actually, I kind of agree with the troll.
I don't crack down on plagiarism very much unless I can give it some meaningful context, i.e. "If you want to study in North America, this will not be acceptable, so let's learn how to do it on your own."
Otherwise, it's just me imposing my (American/Western) standards on a group of people who don't find plagiarism to be wrong. Why would I want to do that?
If I do find that a piece of writing is plagiarized, that student gets a poor grade anyway. If they care, and ask me why, I tell them. No one has ever argued with me.
Finally, when I taught in China, most of the textbooks I was using were themselves stolen (uncited) from other sources. How am I supposed to tell my students not to copy from other sources when the textbook itself does? |

Teaching always involves a fair bit of hypocrisy. |
