Hello,

Does anyone know how I can purchase an extra health insurance program here in Korea. The national coverage only covers so much . . . and I've met other ex-pats who had purchased additional health coverage. I no longer have contacts with these individuals else I would ask them.

Thanks for any help.

Eric

Cigna does a plan called "global expat" that covers quite a bit. You can opt for basic in-hospital coverage (which also covers out-patient care for cancer, though) or get the fancier coverage.

You can call them directly:

+44 (0)1475 788 182 or +1 800 835 7677

It's great because you'll be covered in every country in the world except the US and/or your home country (except for up to 90 days in your home country if it isn't the US).

I have the same thing as NYC_Gal with cigna global .

I dont know if we have the same coverage plan but I pay around 100$ US a month. I'm covered all over the world minus the USA. Its mostly for serious injuries and serious illnesses. Basically what korean national health insurance wouldnt cover..

I think that we have the same one. It's about $110 a month.

I looks like I'm going with "Integra Global" . . . looks like a similar policy for the same price (I might be like $130 because I'm 39 now.)

Cheers

So what doesn't the national health insurance cover????

I understand cancer and other terminal illnesses and I'd go home if i had something like that. But it doesn't cover serious injury??? What's the point of it then??

It's very difficult to find extra insurance if you're not at least married to a Korean national. I'd rather be able to talk to customer service in English, though, when it comes to injuries.

National insurance is good, but it's smart to have everything covered. I had my appendix out a few years ago, and, while much was covered, I still ended up paying over 2 million won out of pocket, because I didn't have extra coverage yet.
