I am trying to decide where to go for about 6 weeks in July and August.
I'd like to go somewhere that is cheap, has good food, snorkeling, outdoor activities, nature, relaxation, and decent weather. I'd rather read a book than visit a nightclub. I'd also like go somewhere new, if possible. I've been to Thailand, Cambodia, Bali and Flores, and Srilanka already.
I've seen some really nice pictures from the Philippines (Palawan?), but I read that it's typhoon/ rainy season. Is it that bad across the county? I was in Borneo during their rainy season and I didn't like being constantly damp, so I've always gone to dry places.
I am also considering the Perenthians and Malaysia's east coast. How similar is it to Penang or Langkawi? I wasn't a huge fan of either.
I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of south Asia, so any advice would be appreciated. |

The typhoon belt cuts the Philippines in 1/2.
The northern 1/2 is prone to typhoons.
If you go to the Visayas or Northern Mindanao then the weather is fine.
The eastern part of Bohol has some nice places and are not particularly touristy (so are cheap). http://www.bohol.ph/
Siquijor, Siargao, northern Palawan (occasionally storm prone), Cebu province (south of Cebu city), and Camiguin all meet your "requirements" and are south of the typhoon belt so don't get the storms.
Just go back through this forum for lots of information (better than the lonely planet).

In the Philippines it is incredibly easy to get off the beaten track. I took a ferry from Cebu to Ormuc in Leyte, then bus to Naval in Biliran and a small boat to a nearby island called Higatangan and found myself in a place with one tiny resort where I was the only guest and the whole island only had 4 hours of electricity per day. They also told me the other side of the island had pirates there so I shouldn't visit. real pirates! they may have even had eyepatches
I also got taken to meet the priest on arrival. I remember asking at the resort do other foreigners visit there and the charming girl working there said "yes sir of course we do, there was another foreigner here about three months ago".
Similar places to this exist all over the Phils especially in the Visayas area. Great country! |

I hear Malaysian beaches are nice but Kota Kinabalu was HORRIBLE when I went there in 2008 (and others who've been there say it sucked, too). I haven't been to Penang but well, I've heard from others that Malaysia doesn't have that fun vibe you get in other parts of Southeast Asia.
I go the Phils a lot, and am trying to get away from Boracay, which is showing signs of decline. I suggest Pagudpud, which is like 1.5 hours from Laoag, which is an hour flight from Manila. You also have Dumaguete, a university town that was just voted one of the world's cheapest places to retire (lots of Koreans and Iranians there learning English, but I digress). El Nido is also quite nice but it's tough to get there if you don't feel like paying $300 for a chartered plane ride.
I hear much of Indonesia outside of Bali is quite nice and not so touristy or expensive. |

People will tell you go south in the Philippines this time of year, but the weather is so unpredictable now (e.g., Yolanda). For example, last summer (2013) the weather in Davao was sunny every day for the 10 weeks I was there. On the other hand, this last December and January, typically the dry season, the weather was overcast and raining everyday throughout the country. It's a bit of a crap shoot, but in my 25 years of going to the Philippines the farther south you go typically the better the weather you will find this time of year. |

I'm pretty sure Ireland doesn't have any decent snorkelling and it certainly doesn't have any decent weather. It's pretty pricey too. |
