Here's another dumb thread by joelove. I'm trying to enter this with an open mind, as if that was possible. Violence is based on the conflict we each have inside, is it not? Did you think you were different from violence? The contradictory desires, the nationalism, the beliefs, all these separative factors, are these emotional and intellectual things different from violence?
Did you think, perhaps, that violence was a thing outside yourself? As I get older, I realize it is not. I never intentionally hurt a person in my life, but I know sometimes the urge exists. I have no one to talk with over these things. Maybe a philosophical forum where people will tell me the nature of self or time. That's all nonsense.
We don't know what violence is. That's obvious. Because we keep killing and being brutal. We never resolve these things that we've been living with for thousands of years. |

A) Sapiens are still just a bunch of monkeys; fearful of the unknown, get mad and jump up and down, bang their fists on the ground. Might evolve out of it, to some degree, in a few million years?
B) Also intelligence allows one to calculate the gains from violence. For example a gangster calculates that inflicting damage on some local business owners will cause them to pay a protection fee every month out of fear.
C) And then you have psychopaths, who engage in violence for kicks.
Conclusion -- so yeah I guess it's an internal thing; either emotional, calculated, or for fun. |

Violence is necessay and useful.
It is not something to overcome, it is something to learn how to control.

You don't have to be a psycho to like violence. kids do that all the time, just for the reaction of the pain inflicted.
Sometimes it can be fun to see others pain, sometimes it can be ....sexually..arousing....
Good Post though, Violence should be explored. |

Violence is an argument punctuated by action. In the moment, it is raw. When premeditated, it is cruel. When it is sanctioned by the state, it is a combination of the two and the outcome is rarely short lived. |

Personally, I find violence in any form for any reason abhorrent. Nor would I physically fight back if attacked. I'd sooner die a peaceful person. |

Sure....in theory.
But then someone like me, on the sideline, can't stand and watch this passive guy getting beaten to death.
What to do? To be honest...I am happy to step in.
Gives me an 'excuse' to kick a bully's ass.
On top of that....I get to keep Schwa on this side of reincarnation.

Sexually arousing? I'll never understand those videos on the internet of girls kicking guys in the junk or pouring burning hot candle wax on their nipples.
Call me old fashioned but all a girl has to do to get me aroused is show up. |

You might want to read William Vollmann's Rising Up and Rising Down, even if only the single-volume edition. In it, he attempts a moral calculus of violence. He's a remarkable writer, too, if that's a factor for you. |

Is there anything to do about violence? If there's no peace in yourself then that's it. It's OK, I don't have peace either most of the time. |
