I teach in a boys school so most of my classes the problem is getting 40+ boys to be queit rather than coaxing them into talking. However I have a couple of classes that are really queit classes where maybe a few students will talk I have been trying something new with these classes.
I ask for one volunteer and then after they have been called on they get to choose the next person. The reason that my students love it is that it gives them a chance to drop their friends in the hot seat. I also sometimes drop a talker some candy as an added incentive so they never know if they are going to get a chance to answer. The only rule I have is that the same students can't be chosen repeatedly.
It's been really working well and I'm finding that I'm getting a wide variety of students talking in class because of it. Granted I have big classes so I'm sure how well it would work in the smaller ones but just an idea to keep in mind. |

Put them in Teams. Have each group come up with a team name that they will keep for the entire month. For aach class a different leader must be chosen. That person will be whom gives you the answers that day. You can then assign points to the group based on correct answers or behaviour. At the end of the month, you then award them prizes. I gave out two prizes each month. One for correct answers, one for behaviour, that way a group that isn't good that good in English can aim for the other award.
It works really well, b/c the students will encourage or persuade their teammates to spit out the answers. Though, sometimes the noise level gets to be a drawback. |

I used these questions with middle school students...they worked OK but with a very small class they aren't the best if you don't prep them properly.
I "assumed" middle school students understood "would", but they actually thought the questions meant now and felt the topics were too adult for middle school...(would you ever spank your kids...)
I realized the problem when one student piped up and said...(Would...like if?...) Normally I introduce the phrases used but I was thrust into a middle school conversation class with a moments notice...not having taught middle school I expected their level to be a bit higher and jumped right into the questions after a warm-up.
I still use these questions and I have found something that works well.
This was a class of 6 middle school students grade 1-3 mix of boys and girls. The girls were QUIET...two boys were "helpfully" trying to answer questions (I have lunch with them sometimes...I think they felt obligated) and another quiet boy of much lower level.
Anyway I give them time to answer the questions then I crumple up a piece of paper. I pass it to someone asking them a question...they answer it then pass it along...(sort of like the OP's ask a question.) or that's how it's SUPPOSED to work...
One of the girls answers my question..(surprise..I didn't expect her to)..then wails the paper at a boy in the front of the room and asked him a question...LOUDLY...I didn't even know she had a voice..English OR otherwise...This "game" went around the room and everyone had a blast... |
