Some of us do it, some of us don't. Some say "So what?" Others say "If you're teaching English here your grammar should be up to standard."
What do you think? Should we correct each other's grammar...or not? |

Make allowances for typos.
Send pms to graciously suggest corrections of particularly noticeable spelling and/or grammar mistakes when you can.
Do point out persistent and uncorrected problems. But don't get too preachy, as we are all prone to err.
Do, however, pounce on preachy writers with chronic patterns of atrocious spelling and grammar mistakes. |

Some do; some don't. "So what?" some ask. Others insist that if you're an English teacher, your grammar should measure up to professional standards.
But what do you think? Should we correct each other's grammar? |

Bo Peabody: I agree with your correction of the comma, but not about the caps (or capitals, if you prefer!). I'm quoting, so the first letter in the " " should be capitalized.
While I agree that we should teach REAL English to our students, I also think that they should have a good grounding in grammar. Many, if not all, of our students will be taking the TOEIC exam and they REALLY need to know their grammar for this test.
Gopher has the best suggestion...(and these are called "ellipsis:
| Quote: |
1 a : the omission of one or more words that are obviously understood but that must be supplied to make a construction grammatically complete b : a sudden leap from one topic to another
2 : marks or a mark (as ... or or --) indicating an omission (as of words) or a pause |
m-w.com)
to politely PM a person who consistently makes grammar errors. Sure, typos happen, but using the wrong tense doesn't reflect well on the level of teachers here. |

Oops! You're quite right, ajuma. Please note that this unusual error on my part is not indicative of my general knowledge of the English language. I'm sorry!

I've highlighted people's mistakes in the past, but only when then have seen fit to ridicule other's for their mistakes while making a blunder themselves.
Otherwise leave it alone. While this may be a forum for ESL teachers it's still just a discourse community whose predominant function is to communicate, not correct other people's grammar/spelling mistakes. |

I have a modest proposal:
I think it should be like Germany's Good Samaritan Law- if you're the first person on the scene you must stop and render assistance or risk being thrown in jail.
I think the mods could easily implement this- if it is discovered that a post after a post containing errors does not itself contain corrections of said errors then the user of the second post shall be handed a temporary ban; HOWEVER, if it can be proven that the user who created the original post with the errors did in fact deliberately create these errors with intent of causing a subsequent user to run afoul of these rules by omitting the neccessary corrections in their post, then the second user shall be handed a temporary ban as per the first part of this sentence while the first user shall receive a lifetime ban (or multiple lifetime bans if the user is of the Hindu or Buddhist faiths).
Typographical errors shall be ignored. The determination of whether any error is typographical or not shall be handled by an independent and non-partisan panel of no less than 11 ESL or EFL instructors who hold MA degrees or higher. The moderators shall abide by the panel's decisions on any given error unless there is a 50% +1 majority consensus among moderators to overturn the panel's decision.
Pretty simple and straightforward, wot?
So, whaddya say?
It'd only take what- 30 or so more moderators?
No problemo. |

| There are grammatical slips, typos, and drunken rants, and then there are some 'English teachers' who couldn't write a grammatical sentence to save their lives. If they're just babysitters at kiddie hogwans who like to post on other fora about living in Korea, it's not such a big deal; but when they're offering advice on teaching, it's very hard to take them seriously. |
