It's entertaining to look back at old posts.
Mine was January 28, 2005. And in good Smee fashion, it was a thread killer.

However, as others have said, there are undergrad courses which focus on "The Structure of English," phonetics, semantics, and other subjects that make mention of grammar. But, most professors here believe in the "global" characteristics" of language (pragmatics, register, power relationships) rather than "local" issues of grammar. Sometimes these areas mix, in advanced levels, but (fortunately, I think) English professors are starting to realize that language courses should focus more on the sum rather than on the parts.

I cringed when I saw mine-- it was a very dull question about what's fun/possible during Chuseok. Maybe I was deliberately setting the bar low so I could wow you all later... |

You're right, Smee, it is fun to look at old posts. For example, it took me exactly 23 days after landing to come up with the following diagnosis re: dating in Korea:
Quote: |
GIs = unwell
Korean guys = nice to look at, hard to talk to
Other foreign teachers = very very unwell
Korea = dreadful place to look for a relationship, very easy place to hook up. |
And then, there's this gem from Trevorcollins in the same thread:
Quote: |
Heh heh. This old can of worms again.
What's been decided in the past ?
Foreign guys are all fat, disgusting nerdy alcoholics.
Foreign girls are all hairy legged, opinionated, loud bushpigs. |
Oh, Dave's. The more it changes, the more it stays the same.

Hello all, I'm just curious if PCs are the same in Korea as in the US, as far as the cable types and connectability of hardware. I'm thinking about bringing my hard drive and just buying a PC to put it in when I'm there, or maybe just buying a laptop instead, depending on prices.
Also, what are the keyboards like? Are English keyboards hard to find in Internet cafes and the like?
Cheers,

There were some pretty funny replies, like this one from eamo:
What are computers like in Korea?
They're big green things with four eyes and a spiky tail. When you turn them on they go, 'pfut, pfut, pring!'.
Haha. |

i was so sweet and kind back then *sniffle*. i think i'll stop posting for a while. to look upon my post history, the casual observer may take me as a black militant "hate whitey" angry black woman. which is of course ridiculous. i wouldnt be caught dead wearing camouflage. |
