I am a bit of a gym rat. I like to work up a good sweat 5 times a week if possible. What are my options as far as gyms go? Or should I invest in workout DVD's while still in the mothercountry? Also, where would I be able to find 3, 5, and 8 lbs hand weights? Other gym paraphenalia?

There are lots of Health Clubs in Korea. There are also lots of sport stores. You can find handweights in most places like E-mart or Homeplus.

Might be hard to find weights in THOSE specific weights.

1, 2, 3, 5, 10 kilogram sizes are what you usually see for hand weights/dumbells.

There are gyms / fitness centers all over with prices ranging from 30k - 120k won per month.

You can get sport gear in many places as well as major department / discount stores.

I knew someone who paid 160K won per month.
Moral of the story (hopefully of benefit to the OP): negotiate!

If you're into weights, definitely join a gym. If you're just into cardiovascular, save your money and climb your stairs. I was bored two days ago, so I climbed the stairs in my fifteen-story apartment twice. Ugh, I can still feel it.

Running stairs is great exercise. If you want a more scenic alternative, try hiking- there's lots of great hiking in Korea.

I love both actually. The cardio is what sucked me in and my sis finally talked me into weights. Now that my arms show a distinct improvement in shape and strength, I am hooked. Now if I could just convince myself to enjoy crunches, I would be set. Wink

KGs. Duh. Forgot about that. I am a little wary of cardio out in the open as I am afflicted with a sense of direction that can only be described as laughable. I think that I shall poke about for a fitness center at first. I'll get around to the hiking, running, walking thing once I am positive that i can find my way back to me flat.

What do you do to keep fit?

the going rate for a new and decent gym in the Seoul area is currently 99,000 for a 3 month membership. If you pay more...you're a sucker.

I should add...
that's for the basics...cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, shower, locker.

If you want raquetball, aerobics, gold then expect to pay more.

You can get a good deal at Calif. Fitness if you will be in Seoul (or soon) Daegu. Their price includes classes and they have a wide range of things. Most people pay under 1mill for a year there and it blows away any of the mom and pop places

Just dont get a personal trainer, thats expensive and some arent that good

Will they let you attend a few aerobics classes before you decide whether or not you want to pay for them? Considering the major certifying exams aren't offered in South Korea (to my knowledge), I have my doubts about those classes.

I was quoted this price too. I now pay 330,000 for 3 months in advance, allowing me time to look for somewhere near me (Daechi Dong) that is cheaper.
