Believe it or not, it's true:

SMOKING IS GOOD FOR YOU!

I smoke at least two packs a day, and sometimes (when I'm feeling heroic) as many as four.

Apart from the purely subjective improvement in my overall sense of physical and mental well-being, here are some of the evidences in support of smoking as a health-boosting tonic:

http://www.forces.org/evidence/index.htm documents scientific studies which show that smokers are significantly less likely to suffer from Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other neurological orders. And that's just the beginning . . .

"Smoking Helps Protect Against Lung Cancer":
http://www.vialls.com/transpositions/smoking.html

Besides which, smoking is GOOD FOR THE SOUL!

_Cigarettes Are Sublime_, by Richard Klein, one of the most informative and provocative books I've ever read, has played a decisive influence in my personal decision to keep on puffing. Link: http://tinyurl.com/ygk3sx

Terribly sorry to hear you're very likely to get lung cancer, believe that kind of intake is actually good for you and are prematurely aging, despite what ever benefits you believe tobacco to have.

Mind you, I fully support your right to smoke and do not believe in restrictions on smoking. I absolutely freakin hate the p-c anti-tobacco brigade.

In Britain at least, tobacco sales constitute 7.5 BILLION (GBP) in taxes and smoking related diseases cost the national health service 1.5 BILLION - a profit of 6 BILLION. These folks advocate impoverishing the state (or at least depriving it significantly) just so they can eat a meal in a restaurant smoke-free. Absolute vermin.

p.s. I'm a social smoker. Average intake probably 20 per week.

Link #1: For every article that is included, one could find a hundred that contradict their message. I'm not going to bother wasting my time but I'm certain it could be done by someone with the wherewithal

Link #2: Not a single cite.

I'm not a HUGE fan of the "ban smoking everywhere" group. I like having dinner in the nonsmoking section but as far as I'm concerned, leave it at that.

I also not a huge fan of bad or misrepresented science. They expose some studies as being bunk and I can respect that, but they also present 4 or 5 articles that contradict the "establishment" without telling the reader that the "establishment" came about because of hundreds of thousands of scientific enquiries.

It's a perfectly coherent position.

I enjoy a smoke with a drink (usually just weekends).

I do not support any form of tobacco prohibition because - even though sigs are the biggest killer by far - the economic good their legal distribution provides totally crushes the health problems tobacco causes. T

That said, it's extremely unhealthy - there's no question about that.

But if everyone quit smoking tomorrow, if smoking became THAT socially unacceptable (we're nearly there in the west), it'd be a complete disaster because (at least in my country's case) that's 6 BILLION smackers per year down the drain that's gotta be made up for some other way - income tax rises perhaps? And how many anti-tobacco buffoons also object to high taxation I wonder? Friggin morons, they make me wanna puke.

There's no such thing as a "social smoker". It's a phrase that was created to make people feel better about smoking..."I'm not a smoker...I just smoke socially.."

If you smoke, you smoke...But I think it's funny when people refuse to see themselves as a smoker because......I dunno....if you smoke, then you can think there's too much wrong with it.

And 20 a week? How often do you drink?

"I'm not an alcoholic...I only drink six times a week socially." Laughing

Answer the question. Do you talk in two distinct voices when you make diametrically opposing, alternating statements?

I'm picturing you saying "smoking bad" in a Shirley Temple little girl voice, and your "pro-smoking comments" in like a James Cagney drawl.

About right?

You could find a thousand articles about why smoking is bad, and a hundred why it's good.

There is only one benefit to smoking that I'm aware of: it fights bowel disorders like Crohn's and colitis. Actually the largest group of people to have those problems are ex-smokers.

How is it in any way contradictory to say that smoking is bad for your health while at the same time arguing that it is and should be a personal choice and that there are advantages in other spheres (such as tax income)?

Spinoza, while I agree with your stance on not prohibiting smoking (or any drugs for that matter), I do disagree on the restaurant (public spaces) issue for the simple reason that I can now go to restaurants at home and not worry about ending up in the hospital with a smoke induced asthma attack. If you want to smoke, that's fine, but don't make me do it along with you. Legality can, and should come with some restrictions, besides just simple respect for those around you.

Those weren't his only positions, but I'll let the "intellectual heavyweights" such as you and Sbignoza root around in each others' feces...

I hope you fellas realize all of this debate is in response to a post (way beyond) obviously meant as a joke, from a poster who, gee, given his name and avatar, just might, I dunno...be joking? (which apparently escaped both your genius, and spinoza's superior big brain.

Thanks fer playin'!

Jejujitsu,

You're not that bad a poster generally, but in this case you should simply shut up. You're embarrassing yourself with abysmal arguments. There's another either/or fallacy (where the arguer suggests a falsely limited bunch of options to typically two where in actual fact many more are available) below.....(not by you)

I see what you're getting at, but you also suggest only two options, either one smokes or does not.

Someone who smokes every day is considered to smoke whereas someone who smokes occasionally clearly uses the substance differently to the way we normally understand "Person P smokes".

You wanna put someone who smokes at weekend only in the same pot as someone who has a cig after every meal, every morning within 5 mins of waking up, 10 or more cigs per day? Fair enough. Don't expect others to buy that logic, if you can call it that.

Weekends (quite heavily).

Occasionally I'll get pissed on Tuesday nights too because I sometimes see some Korean businessmen I'm good friends with then, but I try to avoid that usually.

I enjoy social smoking because I feel I can have the best of both worlds without (hopefully) too much negative effect on my health.
