In contracts, is it standard to have a "teaching hour" equal exactly 60 minutes regardless of class length and number of classes, or have a teaching hour equal however long the class is (40-50 minutes, usually)?
For example:
120 teaching hours could be 120 40-50 minute classes (between 4800 and 6000 minutes of total teaching time)
OR
120 teaching hours could be exactly 7200 minutes of teaching (144-180 classes).
Which is the standard, if there is one? |

There doesn't seem to be a standard, which is why it's a good idea to ask the school you are dealing with what their definition is.
My current contract has me working 22 'hours' a week, but in reality it is a lot less because some periods are 45 minutes and some are 50, but there is a total of 22 of them. Some hakwons require teachers to work 120 hours a month but the number of classes is greater than 120 because the class is shorter than 60 minutes. Ask before you sign on the dotted line. |

Depends on if the school is a reasonable outfit or a pack of blood sucking weasels out to bleed you dry. My first job was 120 40-minute classes. After that how could I ever accept 120 HOURS? Crazy talk. A man's gotta prep. |
