| I am a Filipino and i teach in a Korean English Academy in Baguio. I hear a lot of talk from my co teachers about going to Korea someday to teach english. And it sounds like a good idea. I was just wondering how feasible this thought may be. Does anybody here actually know any Filipinos who are teaching English in Korea? |

to be honest ... its not that easy! although koreans are very interested in learning english, they are not interested in learning filipino english ... the accents are different and even though most koreans will never speak english as well as you do, they hope to learn the english that the americans, canadians, etc. know, so oneday , they too can emulate them ... your chances of you or your friends landing a decent job here will be very difficult ... although i do know some who work at churches teaching children english, they get paid very little ... kinda like charity ... if you want to come here to make money, it will be almost impossible but if you come here for fun, to get a feel of what korea is like, and do not mind not making much money, its perhaps possible ...
i know a friend (gyopo) who got fired because the director figured why pay him 2 million won when he can hire a filipino, who speaks english, for 1.3 million won. well my gyopo friend found a better job, but the filipino soon got fired a few weeks later because the parents complained too much ... regardless, the hagwon lost a lot of students and money ... i think if the director is foolish enough to fire someone so he can hire someone else for less is doomed to have his hagwon fail ... and the filipinos here are willing to work for less but the parents complain too much and prefer gyopos or caucasions ... SORRY! |

Legally, not good. Illegally, fairly good. |

Funny...I was at a church that said "we don't want Filipinas, because they don't speak clearly."
Jesus loves you, too! |

to be brutally honest, unless you look like daniel henney (below), its going to be tough to find a job. as superficial as it sounds, to academy owners, looking the part has a lot to do with the ability to teach english. also, you have to fight the stigma of south-east asians being second class citizens in korea.
i know.. it sucks, but how else can u explain thousands of foreigners who have the interpersonal skills of a mcdonalds employee and are unqualified to teach besides the fact they have blue eyes and white skin.

Several cases I've heard Filipino women who married to korean men teach english in korea ( some at public schools ). Sooner or later, korea will open door to Filipinoes, Indians to teach in korea. I surely believe it's going to happen in near future. By the way I am a korean. |

| There are many Koreans looking for Fillipina nannies so their children can grow up speaking English. They pay isn't the best...around 1 million/month or a little more but room and board are included. |

| i used to have a filifina coworker. i always felt bad because even though we worked the same hours and taught the same lessons she only earned 1 million won. she only got the job was we were in one of the most rural places in korea and she was married to a korean through the church. i've talked to many filipinos over the years about this question but i have to say i really dont know how you would go about finding work here, unless you went as rural as possible. |

We have a Filipino who is married to a Korean working at our hagwon but I know in reality she is not the norm. |

| I have heard of Koreans going to the Philippines to learn English for very cheap rates. If you want to work something out for cheap wages, I bet they may accommodate you. There are some workers here from the Philippines too. I think that Koreans probably think of the Philippines as their Mexico. But I could be wrong. It's more likely that the accent is a bigger issue than nuanced bias. |

Chances? Slim and none. A snowball in hell has a better chance.
Why? Because the powers to be in korea have their brains up their rear ends.
A few years ago, I contacted the P.I. Embassy in seoul...the university I was at entertained the idea of hiring a professor from the P.I.
Immigration said no....only those from english speaking countries are allowed! I then went on about how elementary school students in the P.I. have far better english language skills than the koreans who are teaching english at the university now. That's when I contacted the P.I. embassy...they have also tried...to no avail. It seems that those from the P.I. are only good enough to do the unprofessional jobs in korea. Koreans are their own worse enemy at times I think. |

Koreans will hire Phillipinos(Phillipino passport) if the price is right. I've seen Phillipinos with Americans/Canadian passports do well for themselves.
The problem will be with the visa. Many female Phillipinos are on F-2 visas (married to a Korean), so its a way for Hagwon owners to take advantage of the situation and lowball them (1,000,000 won a month with no housing). Thats why you will see Phillipinos working in Hagwons. |
