|
|
I had to open a seperate account in my name and give the bank book and atm card to my employer, apperantly the school pays me in to that account and then my boss gives me my salary out of there.
i heard that this is actually not illegal and all after school program jobs make their employees do this, i think its crap though and something has to be illegal about this. |

I can tell you exactly what's going on because the same thing happened to me last year. I had a second job with a public school and the recruiter set-up the same kind of "I'll take your bankbook info and do it for you...". Needless to say I felt very uneasy about it and after 4 days, I closed the account and gave the school my new account, bypassing the slimy recruiter. Here's what I found out:
You're actually getting paid a hell of a lot more than you realize. The recruiter is taking his cut and doesn't want you to find out how much he's @#$%#$% you on. In my case, I was paid 1.8mil. to work from 9-12 m-f. This seemed fine for a second job. But the ATM thing threw me off and after I changed it, I found out that I get paid 4ok won an hour. That's 2.88 for the month, netting the slimy recruiter more than his fair share, and for what?
Do what I did. Go directly to the school director (or the English teacher/assistant that you deal with at the school) and give her a copy of your ACTUAL bank info and tell her that your banking info has changed. Go into the bank that you opened the acct. with the recruiter at , tell them you want to close it. Show your ID card, passport, fill out some forms and you're done. Now, you're gonna have a pissed off recruiter because he's losing out on some big money if you pull this trick. The next month the recruiter got a hold of me and was asking furiously as to what I'd done, but I explained to him what I knew and that I did not feel comfortable with him taking 40% of my earnings for simply having introduced me to the school and going to immigration with me. So, I told him I'd pay him what I thought was fair, which was 200,000won a month for 3 months and 0 after that.
It worked for me, but mainly because the school loved me, so make sure the director isn't related to the recruiter or some other bizarre scheme.
Good Luck and hope this helps!

Change the PIN number on your account without telling your crooked boss. Better yet report your ATM card lost and get a new one with new PIN number.
Hopefully someone will deposits large amount of Korean won. Hopefully in Billions of won.
When your boss tries to take money out, he can't.
Check your account every day to see if a large amount of money has been deposited.
If it's in Billions of won. Take the money and run with it. It's your money in your account. |

It's OK, you're not the only dumb one, the people you "talk to" are also dumb. |

It's not dumb.
It's stupid.
Stop it or else you'll deserve what ever you get (or don't end up getting). |

teachnically i think it might legal because you gave your boss access to that bank account. But you are seriously going to get screwed over oHowever, I agree get hat card back. I doubt he will willingly give it to you. Do what elksnitis said. It should work without any problems, unless the school is buddy buddy with the recruiter. If the recruiter doesn't like it, tell them to screw off because there is NOTHING he can do about it. Plus, to make mattes worse, YOU not your recruiter will get hosed at tax time because you will probably fall into a higher tax bracket, and you can be damn sure your recruiter will not be paying those taxes for you.
When I first came to Korea some recruiter tried bull this 2 bank account thing with me. I said it was shady and that money should be put into HIS bank account. He took offense and gave me this can't trust a foreigner in Korea speach. Then I asked for his credit card info just to rub salt in his eyes. Naturally i walked away. The visa was not submitted to immigration so i got those back too. Thank God I forgot to include passport sized photos after I handed him my documents.
BTW who is your visa through? The school or the recruiting agency? My would have been through the school, but the contract was through the recruiting agency. Also is this bank thing stated in your contract? How many contracts did the recruiter have you sign?
Just curious because I think my recruiter was going to try to farm me out to numerous schools under the GEPIK program. |

That's right! legally it's your money so like others have said, you are responsible for taxes, money laudering, drug dealing, etc. etc. through your account. Be happy. |
