i've been trying to figure out when it is appropriate to use future tense when speaking korean... i've had no luck because many koreans (like many english-speakers) don't really understand the mechanics of their language - it "just sounds right"...
so: what's the difference between present tense and future tense? my teacher tried to explain that future tense is used for "plans" or "intent" - does that mean that whenever i don't use future tense, i don't really plan to do the action?
i don't understand how you can have "strong" and "weak" plans: either you DO plan to do something or you DON'T! like from seinfeld: "there are no big and small coincidences, there are JUST coincidences!" |

I am going to go to the concert next week
vs.

Generally, you're safe with the 'probable future' even if you're definitely gonna do something. Ask a Korean how to say "I'm gonna go to America" they'll give you this tense (ㄹ/을거예요.......)
A more pertinent example might be 저녁 먹으러 어디로 갈거예요? Where are we going to eat dinner? But - as I say - it seems to me as though you can use it for anything concerning the future, but maybe you might wanna use the 'definite future' if you fancy: 효리가 오겠어요 (Hyo Ri will come - definitely).
More specifically, to plan to do something is ___ (으) 려고 하다 (가려고 해요, 입으려고 해요, 삼겹살 먹으려고 해요.........) |

Seconded.
(My bad on the hangeul not coming out in the quoted text.) |
