I need help understanding a few of the following items. These are the requirements to work in a public school in Seoul posted by WorkNPlay:

#4 What do they mean by Original Employment Proof Letter?
#5 Is this really necessary? How would I obtain this?
#6 Is this a physical or something else? Is it necessary?
#8 I work as a teacher here in California. A letter from my district?
Lastly, what are they expecting for my reference letters? Do they want the person's contact information within the letter or at all?
I've looked around the forums and have some semi-answers but nothing in detail. I REALLY appreciate any help. This website is a God-send. |

Number 4 must be a double up of number 8 unless they mean non-teaching work?!
You can contact your local police for a criminal record clearance. I haven't done it but friends have.
The medical form is a basic medical checkup, got mine done in Korea last month, height, weight, simple vision and hearing test, blood work including chlolesterol, liver tests, kidney. Chest x-ray, diabetes test etc.
You have to prove you have been in a full-time teaching position for at least one year to move up the pay scale. A letter from your district stating your work period and that you're full-time might do it. |

What you should do is call WorkNPlay and ask them these questions, not other ESL teachers that may or may not have a clear understanding of all the requirements. |

When I asked my recruiter about #4 and #8, she said it was for gyopos. Same thing with the job duty of translating Korean into English...I pointed out that I was hardly qualified for that..my kindy kids would be much better at it, and she said that it was meant for gyopos.
As for number five, she gave me a link to a site where she said I could order one online. This proved not to be the case at all. Put my dad on the case and am waiting to hear back from him. |

Once you get hired by the public schools, you will receive in the mail, a letter from the school board (provided by the recruiter) that officially states you have been hired. This is #4.
#8 I believe is saying, if you have prior teaching qualifications (like you do in California) you need a letter, or other proof to back up these qualifications.
That's what it was when I was hired by SMOE.
Yes, you need a criminal record check done. I had mine done in Canada, so I just went to the local police department, filled out a form, showed ID, paid the fee, and it was ready in 5 business days.
As far as the doctor's note, I just went to my doctor and said "I need a letter or paper stating that I'm in good health, and have no underlying conditions that will prevent me from working in Korea for a year". He asked me a couple of quick questions, checked off some stuff on a letter he has already prepared for such situations, filled in the appropriate information, and I was on my way.

Hell yeah #4 is necessary. A criminal record check is the very least they should be doing (and it's not cuz hagwons don't even require it!!!). They should be doing much deeper background checks for anyone who wants to work with children. |

Sarcasm (LOL). Koreans assume EVERYBODY knows their terms. I've never heard of it, either. |
