I was dating this guy for a couple of months when I asked some questions that he answered quite truthfully. I'm glad he was so honest but now feel wary of dating any more Korean men. If a man is lucky enough to find a job out of college there's this whole salon/prostitute culture that they usually participate in. He said that most guys visit prostitutes with work colleagues and though I've read this over and over again on this site....I guess I didn't believe it until I met a "nice" guy who did the same. How do all the gals here deal with dating Korean guys, knowing that's a regular part of growing up here? Or am I wrong? Maybe not EVERYONE does it. Maybe its just this guy and his soju-swilling buddies. When are Korean women going to crack into the business world and change things?

It's quite popular, but I wouldn't say everyone does it.

Although most of my Korean guy friends cheat on their girlfriends religiously, they rarely hit the brothels--and if they do it's usually just a rub and tug.

Thing that scares me though is the amount of barebacking that goes on. That's the riskiest part of dating a Korean guy who likes the pros, I suppose. Hey that rhymes! Shocked

I try not to think about it, but it does gross me out. Not all of them, but so many K-guys cheat on their wives/girlfriends. I guess with the married ones that's what happens when you marry for reasons other than love. But, then again, it's so easy for the guys to play here. And remember, Korea is a man's world for sure. I guess if you can't stand it, date western guys. But, some of them cheat, too. Even if I had a K-boyfriend who only went for a rub and tug, that's still constitutes cheating in my book. Visiting hookers doesn't make people bat an eyelash here. And some Korean women don't care as long as they have the money rolling in to keep shopping in Apgu/Gangnam/Cheongdam/Shinsa. It's not just men with money who cheat either. A service worker makes enough money to visit hookers and rub and tug ladies.

Also, even if a man marries a woman he actually loves, sometimes his buddies/coworkers will say things like he is not a "real" man if he doesn't go out to play with them at these places, so he may cave in to the group mentality and do it anyways.

A friend of mine was sent to jail then deported for dating a married woman.

Adultery is a criminal offense here. Funny huh?

Yeah, the peer pressure is incredible here. This guy said stuff like, "I'm a real Korean guy." I thought he was just being funny but it comes from having to act manly with one's buddies all the time. It makes me sad that a lot of Korean men don't have women friends. It makes it difficult to be close...and easier for them to justify paying women for sexual favors I guess.

Well, probably a lot more Western guys than you think have gone with prostitutes - especially if they've been in the armed forces. Myself, I don't think it's a big deal provided:

a) they wore a raincoat
b) didn't do it while they were married/going out with a steady girlfriend

I'm not saying Western guys don't see prostitutes. Its just more widely accepted here and from what I hear, men do it regulary, in groups of friends as well as with business associates. It is part of a business deal in many cases. There are less public repurcussions (sp?) for engaging in it and eventually there will be...STDs are on the rise in Korea, of course, and there's the whole moral dillema: why THESE are the jobs that women have to work to support themselves here and what percentage of these women are actually slaves, working to pay off some sort of debt? This sort of practice will continue until women break into the business world here.

Arjuna, YES, Korea is a capatalist society now. Perhaps all that will come crumbling down, but in the meantime...lets support the women who want a high profile job...if they want to get into business, there should be avenues for them to do so. I'll play the enduring optimist and say that women could EVEN CHANGE the business world for the better.
