Because Jobs are what you have to do to survive.
Careers are what you choose to do to live the way you want. |

Generally? You're basically trading the one thing in your life (time) you can't get back in exchange for pieces of paper so you can buy sh*t you don't really need. (Personally guilty of this one. Although I must say at least living here I can pay cash rather than use credit like back in my home country.)
ESL jobs in Korea? Part A: see above. Part B: Too many noobs who come over here without doing the proper research and believe everything the recruiters/schools tell 'em about taking the first job that offers them 2.0 million won a month. |

HUGE cultural differences about:
1. Expectations in the workplace,
2. The meaning of contracts
3. Employee/employer relationships and respect.
Other than that . . . no problem. |

Exactly. The scum I worked for in Incheon had the perfect opportunity to learn how to manage a business--she was married to a retired ISO certifier! It just never occurred to her that a business should be run competently. She was more concerned with skimming from all of her employees, avoiding paying taxes to the government, and just being generally dishonest. Had she bothered to ask her husband a couple of basic questions and tried running the place honestly, she would've made more money in the first place and not have gotten fined in the end. |

Exactly, willneverteachagain. They only get away with what we let them get away with. |

I am going to thnk of the OP's question as taking in all jobs, not just Korea English education-related. That's because a job, by definition, whether paid or not, is a thing ya "gotta do"; a task that gets something accomplished, and nobody necessarily welcomes that kind of thing. Especially when you do it to make money, the only thing you really want is to find some easier way to, for instance, make money. So a job is work, and making money at it makes us more willing to do it, but nothing elevates it above the status of work.
A career is almost in another category. While a job is a necessary part of life, a career is a desired situation of which our lives become a part. It becomes our identity. Everything we are goes into our career, and even our family deals with us as a player in it, and makes it their concern, also. A career makes us memorable beyond and despite the money we make doing it; societally, it gives us obvious value, and the only thing we want is a more valuable way to apply our training, skills and knowledge.
That's the ideal, anyway.
So does your time and energy in Korea fit the title of this post? |

words shmerds. Tomato toemato. Work occupation. Who cares? It is all a state of mind. Either you like to work or you don't. Either you like your work or you don't.
I think the OP means why do Korean bosses seem to make things more difficult than they have to. Of course, only the OP knows what he really means.
I go with the boredom factor. They have to look like they are doing soemthing. They would just be bored raking in the money from your sweat and labor and funny clown tricks. So they wake up in the morning full of new ideas to try, sudden complaints, re-arranged schedules, new teaching styles, new textbooks, new classes, all sorts of pointers on how you can teach better even though they have never observed your class, etc...
Or it could just be Sado-masochism. A person becomes a hakwon manager because they enjoy making whitey annoyed or a person works at a hakwon because they have an unconscious wish to believe their lives are unfair, like one of those country-western songs. I guess it could be something completely different...
Why can't the world be sweeter? Why can't we live in a world of peaches and cream? Or chocolate sundaes? Or where the water tastes like wine? Where is our heaven on earth?
We just live and work in Korea...sigh. |
