Quote:
During the Middle Ages, for example, children were expected to act just like little adults. Adolescence became a distinct stage of life only recently, when a separate teenage subculture began to appear. Until then, young people were "children" until about age 16, when they went to work, married, and had their own children. Today, "young adulthooc" has become a new stage of life, stretching from about age 20 to 30.

I have two questions. First, what does 'until then' mean in the above? That means 'until the Middle Ages' or 'until about age 16' or others?
Second, the bold 'stretching' seems to be wrong and I think that 'ranging' is better than 'stretching'. What do you think?

Thanks.

Until then

That means: "until the Middle Ages". The first sentence is a main sentence and it has named "Middle Ages", the second sentence is a relative sentence applied to the first sentence, the "until then"- sentence is another main sentence and it must refer to the "Middle Ages" sentence.
(hope it's understandable)

The verb "stretch" can also be used to describe a time period as well as "range".

I don't think "until then" means "until the Middle Ages" or "until 16," but rather, "until recently, when a separate teenage subculture began to appear." It doesn't make sense any other way.
