Today I watched a show called "Ugly Betty" in which there was a word I couldn't find in my dictionary: sexaholic
From the context, I guess this word means something like "sex addict", but what confused me was: why doesn't it exist in my dictionary? is it slang? what's its etymology?
Thanks to teachers. |

a workaholic is soemone who is crazy about working.
a sexaholic is someone who is crazy aobut having ...
I found in the urban dictionary:
http://www.urbandictionary.com
Quote: |
sexahol
the combination of hormones, proteins, and other bodily chemicals (seratonin, epinephrine, etc.) that make sex a physically pleasurable act.
the reason people like sex is because if we didn't, the human race would die out from sexual apathy. sexahol is the biological reason why we don't.
I've got a huge term paper due, but I haven't got my sexahol fix in a while, so I"m hitting the clubs. |
sexaholic is the adjective form of the noun. _________________ If I say "I love you" to someone, then I also have to say "I also love everyone else inside you, I love the whole world because of you, I also love myself inside you." -- Erich Fromm, the Art of Love |

It is a kind of slang.
Originally we had the word "alcohol", and someone who was addicted to it was called an "alcoholic".
So in one of those twists of English, we started taking the "-oholic" part of "alcoholic" and sticking it on to the end of other words to show addiction. So you can talk about "sex-oholic", "chocoholic" (addicted to chocolate), "internet-oholic", and so on. "Sitcom-oholic" or simply "TV-oholic" works just fine.
