What were they doing?

And sometimes a writer surprises us by cleverly linking two seemingly disparate items, as Hartford Courant columnist Bill Curry did when he wrote that Republicans in South Carolina were "betting America's addicted to two fossil fuels -- petroleum and testosterone."

I'm not quite sure what your question is. Probably the columnist was writing about stock car racing, or something like that.

CP, Thank you. A car and a racer needs gasoline and testosterone respectively.

Hello Hiromichi - The comment has to do with the 2008 U.S. presidential elections.

South Carolina, traditionally part of the Republican "heartland", has called for an earlier start to their primary season.

It is Currys' opinion that the Republican party platform will continue to be based on traditional conservative values/concerns.

His use of the 'shock trope' (pun - shock troops) "fossil fuels..petroleum and testosterone" is a rather direct 'shot' at the current administrations' (Bush/Cheny) foreign policies.

petroleum - the U.S. incursion in Iraq

testosterone - diplomacy??? Nah....Brute force!!

Philo Kevetch: Now I get the whole picture. Thank you very much for your reply based on close monitoring.
