Quote:
1.Several years ago, public pressure blocked manufacturers from using MSG in baby foods.
2.A memory so terrible that she tried to block it out.

I have two questions.
First, in the #1, 'blocked' doesn't seem to be correct because of 'from'.
So I think that 'stoped' or 'kept' is right rather than 'blocked'.
Would you tell me whether my opinion is wrong?

Second, in the #2, I wonder what #2 means. Can you paraphrase it for me?

Thanks.

In its sense of impeding or preventing something, block can be used here. You could also use, stopped or kept... from, as you suggest.
I would say that public pressure dissuaded manufacturers from using MSG is what actually happened.
